One of the reasons that people in the Western world are suspicious of censorship is because it is a method of control and suppression which has been used by totalitarian states such as Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the past.

The most dramatic censorship of written material is perhaps when books are burnt. Burning books has become a symbol of a society trying to control the people.

In 1933, the Nazis burnt books which held ‘un-German’ ideas.

Newspapers, radio, cinema and the theatre were placed under Nazi control.

Only books which agreed with the Nazi point of view were allowed. All other books were banned and liable to be burned.

Christianity in North Korea

In North Korea it is very dangerous to live openly as a Christian as the government does not agree with the faith.

This is largely because worshiping a God would come above the dedication a person has to North Korea.

Since 1953, at least 200,000 Christians have gone missing. If caught by the regime, Christians may face arrest torture or in some cases public execution. - This shows how dangerous it is to be a Christian in North Korea.

Most Christians worship secretly. This means that they are unable to publically share or distribute materials that might aid worship or spread the Word of God.

This will apply to print media e.g. Christian newspapers but also TV or Film content.

In democracies and authoritarian countries alike, efforts have been made by governments around the world to shut down Web sites, silence bloggers, filter out certain words or censor negative information.

India:

In the world’s largest democracy, the government tried to get Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Google to screen and remove offensive content related to political leaders and religious figures. The Web sites refused to do so.

Syria:

Amid a growing uprising in the country, the Syrian government banned the iPhone in an attempt to stop the constant flow of images and video that anti-government protesters shared online.

Egypt:
A number of bloggers were arrested over the past year in Egypt.
