Like Ruth's dream future of working in an office, Kathy interprets the song as a woman who has "a sort of miracle and she has a baby"(53). Kathy does this because she herself has a dream of having a child sometime in the future. Both aspire to have something they know they cannot. But because "in some mysterious way, a separate set of rules applied to [...] Hailsham students"(23), they both have the idea that somehow it might be in the realm of possibility. This is similar to when Kathy sees Madame in doorway, and even though "she should have said or done something [...] she just went on standing out there, sobbing..."(54). Somehow, it seems that Hailsham students are treated differently than students from other locations. It is a little different in the sense that both of them knew about the lie in regards to the pencil case and in this scenario Kathy knows but Ruth does not realize.
