Learn more here.


The term CLIL was coined by David Marsh, University of Jyväskylä, Finland (1994): "CLIL refers to situations where subjects, or parts of subjects, are taught through a foreign language with dual-focused aims, namely the learning of content and the simultaneous learning of a foreign language."

However, CLIL teaching has been practised for many years, from the Babylonian era to the early sixties when bi-lingual education was introduced in many schools around the world. Even if you are unaware of the term CLIL, you may already have been using CLIL methodology for many years.

  • The texts are not just interesting: they are engaging/ compelling.
  • Students choose what to read.
  • Reading purposes focus on: pleasure, information and general understanding.
  • Reading is its own reward.
  • There are no tests, no exercises, no questions and no dictionaries.
  • Materials are within the language competence of the students.
  • Reading is individual, and silent.
  • Speed is faster, not deliberate and slow.
  • The teacher explains the goals and procedures clearly, then monitors and guides the students.
  • The teacher is a role model…a reader, who participates along with the students.

    You find the material or you make it. and then the students can use it at home.
    Technology: screencapture + record your lesson talking about the picture
    materials don't have to be long, but you need a central location to find it. Edmodo is great.  You can create quizzes here.
    At home sts learn the basics, in the classroom sts process the knowledge.
