To deposit the presents under the tree will be “Father Christmas”, the british equivalent of Santa Claus, accompanied by reindeer Rudolph. To give him thanks for his generosity english children are usually leave him some milk and a mince pie, a typical english dessert.

Beginning in December, like the children of the continent, also the english children begin to open the advent calendar, starting to decorate the tree a few days from the holiday. Tradition has it that there is a tree for each house, but superstition requires that the plant does not remain in the house for more than 12 days. Then, it is removed around the 5th of January.

During the Christmas day we meet at the table to eat a rich lunch together. Differently what happens in other countries, however, lunch sees its end around 3 P.M., when the Queen appears on unified networks to broadcast her message to the nation.

A Christmas custom typical of the English is that of songs. Whole families overcrowd the streets, passing from house to house, singing typical songs and receiving desserts and drink from the inhabitants.

On the evening of Christmas Eve, then, the families usually light a log in the fireplaces. The log will have to burn as much as possible, and a piece will be kept for the following years, in the convictionthet it will bring good luck. In Catholic Ireland, instead, the most typical Christmas tradition is that of lighting the candles. The wole family gathers in front of a windowsill for to light, the evening of the Eve, a candle, symbol of hospitality towards the Holy Family.

Finally, there are the Christmas Cracker, some Christmas gadgets typical of the United Kingdom and Ireland, but widespread in many other Commonwealth countries. It is a cardboard tube wrapped in a Christmas paper and tied in a package similar to that of a candy. Pulling the ends of the crackers breaks with a small bang, revealing the surprise that it contains inside.
