         <description><![CDATA[<div>People who were drawn to the possibility of prosperity of the cities made up the working class. Immigrants from around the world travelled to work in factories in the city. However, these people endured overcrowding, disease, and harsh conditions. The working class did not make much, but contributed to society by working the jobs in factories.</div>]]></description>

These included radios, beauty products, cars, clothing, and vacuums. This new consumerism boosted the economy. Henry Ford created a car assembly line to help average Americans afford automobiles.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After the Civil War, many banks, including the firm of Jay Cooke and Company, invested in railroad construction. This firm closed their doors on September 18, 1873 which caused the country to panic economically. After the collapse of this firm, many other firms and industries followed. In addition, railroad workers struck due to the poor wages and working conditions.</div>]]></description>

The goal of the organization was to protect members from employer retaliation. The group was kept a secret. After 1886, a year of many strikes, the organization lost its influence.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Samuel Gompers met with the leaders of other unions to form the American Federation of Labor in 1886. These members consister of leader of a union,  like the cigarmakers' union and hatmakers' union. Gompers served as president until he died in 1924. The group formed relief for members were in work stoppage and formed strikes. </div>]]></description>
