Skills also help in designing learning standards and each content area has its own set of skills. There is a very high focus on skills in the classroom. This puts other important things such as identity, anti-racisms, criticality, and more on the back burner.

Pursuit:

Skills should never be privileged over other goals or taught alone.
Intellect is the ability to expand thinking beyond the basics, to develop critical thinking skills and learning beyond the classroom to the greater concerns of nation and globe. To do that students need to have a greater stake in education, moving beyond proscribed curriculum and feeling like a valued member of the classroom community.

Identity is fluid. It is 'who you are, what others say you are, and who you want to be.' Teachers must be careful not to stamp an identity on students or students will not grow to learn about themselves or other diverse people around them.
Teachers want students to gain confidence in using their learning about themselves and others to thrive. Therefore it is imperative that students see themselves in the curriculum as well as have the opportunity to make meaning of what they are learning within the context of their identity.
