However, for an older audience to blame their actions on something designed for entertainment is no excuse. Violence comes from individuals and even though they may have been influenced they chose to go through with their actions and have only themselves to blame. This is seen as aristocratic or advanced.
Folk Culture: Seen as being within small homes and working class societies. In the past it would have been seen as peasantry. Today it has been stemmed from tradition. Mechanical reproduction.

Elite fear folk culture -tainted. Fear of the masses and what they could do. They are in power and use media to control common people because we are passive.

Mass Culture: Develop from exposure to the same media (music, news, art etc) rather than interactions with other individuals. Belongs to everybody in society.
Sub Culture: Smaller social groups that think differently to the masses (Skaters, Goth, Punk etc). For example in the UK, Rupert Murdoch owns most newspapers, over 35% of the market. This means that he can control what we see and influence opinions. Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, can see what we like and use this to spread influence by using groups, influential people etc. Google is used to learn more about individuals and use this.
