The Stock Market Crash occurred in New York City, October 29, 1929. An economic boom had begun during the mid 20's. People bought a lot of stocks. Unfortunately, the stocks rose to prices that could not be justified by future earnings, so people panicked and sold their stocks. People lost a lot of their earnings, thus causing the Great Depression. The book,'To Kill a Mockingbird' takes place during the Depression. Characters like the Cunninghams and the Ewells were examples of people in the novel affected by the Grea Depression.

Bank Failures: 1930

Following the Stock Market Crash, citizens rushed to their banks to withdraw their money in fears that the banks would fail. Many smaller banks had insufficient reserves, and the banks just couldn't handle it. Thousands of banks failed, and since there was no insurance, many people completely lost all of their savings. Many people lost their homes and their jobs because of this.

The Dust Bowl Begins: 1930

After years of overcultivation, a series of droughts occurred, and the soil eroded and caused massive dust storms. Crops failed, and food demand also dropped. Farmers were unable to make a profit. Already poverty-stricken people were forced to migrate to California and other states.

Works Progress Administration was an organization created in 1935 by FDR's New Deal. It provided useful work for unemployed victims of the Great Depression. They constructed roads, buildings, bridges, parks, airport, and Hoover Dam. That project alone provided jobs for thousands of people. Bob Ewell from the book 'To Kill a Mockingbird' worked for the WPA for a few days, but he was fired for being too lazy. This was uncommon because people were begging for jobs at the WPA.

World War Two
