North and South Korea start to split when Japan surrendered and allowed Korea to become an independent state again. But with both North and South Korea worried about the election process being rigged it divided the peninsula. Later North Korea tried to force unify the peninsula by attacking the south. When that happened the United States had to step in and hold back the attack. The United States stopped the advances of North Korea at the 38th parallel which is the dividing line to this day.

After the United States stopped the advances of South Korea they helped launch South Korea into Asia's economic powers. With the US continuing support both militarily and developmentally South Korea has started to thrive. Still 28,000 American troops remain in South Korea to act as a deterrent from future attacks by North Korea.

Unlike South Korea, North Korea is extremely underdeveloped economically. It is considered one of the least developed countries in the entire world. But because of the nuclear power that possess they have to be dealt with and it keeps them relative when discussing world powers. North Korea realizes this and that is why they stay relevant and are considered equals in some ways to other nations.

As Korea starts to look to the future a big influencing factor is who takes over power. As any other country they look to grow and enter the international system where they can now have help from other countries. Because they have been so cut off from the rest of the world it has been very hard for them to grow so hopefully moving into the international system will allow them to do that.

Because the United States have played a significant part in South Kore's development we will also play a part in the development of North Korea. We can see this already start to happen with President Trump starting to meet with the North Korean Leaders. This is a process that will take a lot of time because of how cut off from the world North Korea has been. It is not a very inviting country so it will be interesting to see how everything unfolds.
