The Civil War span across four years 1861-1865. Throughout the nineteenth century the North and South took different paths. The North believed slavery was wrong. The South believed slavery should stay. The Northern economy was based on cities and factories. The Southern economy was based upon farming. One strength that the North had was that they had more people, while one strength of the South was that the South had great military leaders

The climate in the North was harsh winters and hot humid summers. The coastline had bays and harbors. There was fishermen and shipbuilding. The inland had rocky soil which made farming hard. The North turned to trade and crafts. There was more cities and factories. Slavery died out in the North and was replaced with immigrant labor. There was an economy boost and products were made cheaper and faster. Also there was a switch from skilled crafts people to less skilled laborers. The transportation in the North was roads, ships, canals, and trains. The North had two thirds of the railroad tracks in the country, which provided an upswing in the economy. In the North individuals were more likely to be educated. There were more Northern children who attended school, compared to the Southern children who attended school. The majority of the Northern men, belonged to the Republican Party and had careers in business, medicine or education.

Two important people for the North were Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Abraham Lincoln was the president for the North during the Civil War and he wanted to end slavery. Ulysses S. Grant was the general of the North during the Civil war. Three important battles that the North won were the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Gettysburg. The Battle of Shiloh resulted in 13,000 losses for the U.S army and 10,000 losses for the C.S army. Ulysses S. Grant did not retreat and led the union to a victory. This victory gave the union a chance to make an eventual blockade on the Mississippi river now that the Union had access to it. The Battle of Vicksburg was fought to take over the Mississippi River. The Union won and even divided the confederate states. The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point for the Union and was the last attack on the north. Two strengths the North had was that they had 90% of the nation’s manufacturing and there was more railroad tracks in the North. Two weaknesses was that the south got one third of the military officers back and most of the officers that stayed were too old for combat.

In conclusion most of the North wanted to abolish slavery and this is one of the things that caused the Civil War. Two things that helped the north was that the North had more railroads to transfer goods and the North had most of the worlds manufacturing.

The climate in the South had mild winters and long hot humid summers. The fertile soil and the warm climate made it ideal for large - scale farms to grow tobacco and Cotton. In the South the economy was based upon agriculture. The South did not see the need for Industrial development. 80% of the labor force worked on farms. There was almost as many black people as there was white people in the South.
There were no large cities beside New Orleans. A few cities were developed along rivers and coastline for shipping agriculture produce to Europe and Northern destinations. By 1860 there was a decline in agriculture development in the south, while in the North there was a growth in the industrial economy. The South used waterways to move between areas because it was easy and cheap. 35% of the nations train tracks were located in the south.

Many people in the south did not attend school because they were taking care of the farms.Unlike the North Southern people were democratic and gravitated towards military careers as well as agriculture

The black Southerners lived separated and a small amount of them were free. They wore special badges and worked as skilled craftsman or servants. The slaves worked as cooks, carpenters, blacksmiths, nurses, and maids/nannies. Most of the slaves worked on the fields. The white Southerners calculated there wealth in terms of land and slaves. Three important people for the South were John Brown, Jefferson Davis, and Robert E. Lee. John Brown raided Harpers Ferry on October 16, 1859 in Virginia and had planned to seize the guns. This was later called the Harpers Ferry raid. Jefferson Davis was the president of the South and Robert E. Lee was the general of the South.

Three important battles that the south won were the Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, and the battle of Fort Wagner. The Battle of Bull Run was the first major battle. The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest day yet no one won. The south claimed that they did though. The Battle of Fort Wagner had heavy losses, but the South still won.Two strengths that the South had was that they had had great military leaders and the battles that they were fighting were defensive. Two weaknesses that the South had was that there was few factories so there was not a lot of weapons produced and they did not have a lot of railroads.

In Conclusion the South wanted slaves to stay because they depended on slaves for there plantations. Two things that helped the south was that their military leaders were great and they were fighting defensively in battles.
