Carol Ann Duffy was born December 23rd, 1955 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was the eldest child and had four brothers. Her family moved to Stafford, England when Duffy was 6 years old, where she attended convent school. While the schools which she attended limited her ability to follow her passion of poetry, she had two English teachers who inspired her to become a poet at the age of 14. Her parents were not very enthusiastic regarding this career choice, but she continued to persevere.

Duffy attended Liverpool University, where she obtained a degree in philosophy. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Duffy became a prominent poet, where she published a vast array of poetry while also hosting reading sessions, visiting schools, and encouraging younger poets. Duffy also worked for The Guardian as a poetry critic. However, after 15 years of being a prominent poet in London, Duffy decided to raise a child. She had a daughter named Ella without the involvement of a father, and moved to Manchester. Duffy however has continued to publish poetry, winning many awards.
