We use the past simple to describe actions or situations in the past.

Very often the past simple ends in -ed:

Many important verbs are irregular, which means that the past simple does not end in -ed;(

to be, was/were, been (ir. vb)

So, the famous To be is also an irregular verb!

Example:

"I was angry because Ted and Lily were late."

To leave, left, left (sair, partir)

Questions / negatives - Past Simple

We use did/ did not + infinitive (of the main verb)

Examples:

Lucy: - Did you go out last night?

Beth: - Yes, I went to the cinema, but I didn't enjoy the film.

We use the past simple to talk about things that started and ended in the past.
Time expressions like Yesterday, last week, last month, in 1999, etc. are often used to speak and write in the past simple tense.
You put regular verbs in the past simple by adding -ed to the verb form.
Irregular verbs have irregular forms. So, you need to memorize them.
^Hint!To build questions and negative sentences don't forget, use
^{DID/ DIDN'T + INFINITIVE of the verb without 'to'}
