The ideas of Marxism were still correct - but, they concluded, the people in charge had failed; they had been too hasty, too arbitrary, too hasty, too incompetent" (473). Soviet leaders did not consider the possibility that they could be wrong. If they had, they might have realized the reason for the discontentment of East Germans.

Since the Soviets were too preoccupied, the focused less on East Germany and were seen as "weak" because there were no competent people in power.

The huge amount of East Germans moving across the border to the West was growing. The Soviet Ministry of Internal Affairs told Semyonov to retain the East German population by using propaganda focusing on the bad lifestyle in West Germany. They also looked into increasing jobs, abandoning mass arrests against civilians and lessing punishments for crimes, and putting extra attention into the agricultural sector. The USSR wanted to keep their population in East Germany. By improving the living conditions, the USSR hoped to retain its population. As the population moves away, so does the economy, so by retaining it, it's the ultimate goal to keep and grow the economy.

"The preoccupation of the Soviets with shor ing up the East German regime made it impossible to offer credible moves on German reunification. By accepting Adenauer's framework for a four power conference, the Western powers also signaled their preference for continuity in West German politics and their willingness to enhance the chancellor's international stature. This helped restore Adenauer's credibil ity on the German question, contributing to his landslide victory ." The East German Uprising was significant within the Cold War as it served as a way for which Adenauer, the West German leader, to boost his popularity and while not recognizing the GDR, he also was able to use political maneuvering to still make calls for German unification, allowing him to solidify his position and the stability of the FGR and show the weakness of the rule of the GDR.

This depicts the soviets in tanks, running over East Germany and then seeing a submarine telescope. This ties into the Cold War because it depicts how the US was using secret tactics to infiltrate Germany. The Soviets in tanks ties into what they did in East Germany and the US being secretive in a submarine ship depicts their tactics for getting Germans on their side. It is significant because it proves how the US was still infiltrating Germany, but now their doing it more in secret
