This is where he picks up his last McDonalds check. This is symbolic because he peeled his socks off after his shift - employees were required to wear this. This shows that regardless of what Chris does, he is always going to be himself.
2) McCandless is very accountable and takes accountability for the lifestyle that he is living. He makes sure the Mr. Franz understands that he is a college educated individual and has chosen to live off the land in the wild. This makes McCandless noble in a way; he’s courageous enough to present himself in this way whether or not people accept his choices. He also shows us how independent he is. In this chapter Franz offers McCandless many opportunities such as a ride to San Diego, however, McCandless still decided to journey on his own and find his way himself. When McCandless arrived Franz had a strong connection with Alex that started making them very close friends. Alex in the other hand tried to not make any close connections or attachments to any body for he wanted to move on without any interference with feelings. So when Franz tried ask if Alex could take Franz last named he kindly refused trying not to make any type love as a father and son. That the feeling that Alex has had and will have for the rest of his trip to Alaska. traveling almost none stop.
