Someone that did something with their lives that was not expected was Michael Dzama (My mom’s Boyfriend). He was born in a family that were strict Jehovah’s Witnesses followers. When he was younger, he would go around preaching to each house around his neighborhood. His parents were really important people in the religion and very well known in the community. Because of this, he had to preach at one of their biggest events to upwards of ten thousand people. As he got older, he started to branch off from the religion because he did not see himself following it for the rest of the life. But, his many brothers and sisters all Stuck with it and still follow it to this day. Michael now runs a flooring business and is very successful without Jehovah’s Witness.

My father sold advertisements for Facebook and my mom runs a flooring business with her boyfriend. As they were both successful in their jobs, they do not push any type of career on me and don’t want me to do any specific job with my life. But, with other families, the story is way different. With some families, they either want their kids to be one certain career, or nothing at all. I believe this a terrible way to parent your child and will not help them in the future. If a parent forces a career on their kid, the child might not be as successful as a child who wanted the career and wanted to work for it. I think you should let your children be what they want to be as they will work better in a job they want to be in, than a job they don’t.

“In 1957, when i was fourteen years old and first began to build my rockets.” (Hickman 1). This quote is important because this pretty much where the story begins. Most of the book is based off of him building rockets, and this is where it is mentioned first. Also, this line is important because most of the first chapter is just about his town which won’t be mentioned a lot throughout the book, but him building the rockets will be mentioned a lot throughout the book.

"‘I cant believe the Russians beat us to it’” (Hickman 16). This is an important line in chapter 2 because this is the first time someone had launched a satellite into space. The Russians were the ones to do it meaning that they had beat America in sending something to space. This is motivation for him and all other americans to work harder to win in the space race. He says in the book he had two phases in his life, and hearing about the russian satellite is where it all changed. That is why this line is so important.

James Murphy
Ms. Lesnick
English 1
27 March 2019
Sonny’s Family Analysis
In the book, Rocket Boys by Homer H. Hickam, Sonny defines his feelings for family as it being very important to him and a great influence on him growing up. When Sonny first mentions his family, he talks about when he was born. His father wanted a baby girl and was disappointed when he was born. This caused tension in the household affecting him growing up because he believed that it was his fault that his parents were fighting. When he speaks about this, he explained, “The story I heard from mom was that dad wanted a daughter, and when I came along he was so clearly disappointed” (Hickam 15). This example shows that family is important to him because the thought of his father being disappointed in him being a boy, really affected him growing up. Also, his mom told him this, the one person in his family that believes in him building rockets and the one person he looked up to in his family. Another example of this his when his dad asked about the launch that Sonny and his friends were watching. This is important because he explains that this, “was the first time [he] remember[ed] him ever expressing any interest in space” (Hickam 77). This shows that he remembers the first time his father had ever taken interest in space and is very important to Sonny. This is important to Sonny because he had made it clear in the beginning of the book that his dad did not care about Sonny’s interest in space which made him upset. But, because this was the first time, Sonny remembers it and remembers how surprised and good he felt when he asked. This is how Sonny defines his feelings for his family.
