Today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with President Donald Trump for their face-to-face meeting. Canada's relationship with the US is multifaceted. Trade is important to both countries but Trump has signalled that he wants to renegotiate NAFTA so that the US can get a "better deal" from Canada and Mexico. How should the PM handle this situation? He needs to stand up for Canada and Canadians while fostering close ties with our biggest trading partner that is now lead by Donald Trump. Please share a brief idea here on PADLET advising our Prime Minister about how he should proceed.

The PM should negotiate with Trump while also making sure that our ties stay very strong with Mexico. Considering that it is assumed that Mexico will not fun the building of the "great wall" and will have a bitter relationship with the U.S., we should take advantage of that and remain close with them as we could use them in helping convince the U.S. that NAFTA is fine as it is. Seeing that NAFTA affects Mexico too, I think that a stronger alliance with them is key.

Prime minister Justin Trudeau must inform President Trump that Canada's needs come first. He must also convey that if they were to "renegotiate NAFTA", then they will do it in a way that benefits Canada and the Canadian people. Prime minister Justin Trudeau has to be tremendously tough, but he also has to be open to the idea of discussion. It's possible that President Trump will present a newer, better version of NAFTA. If Justin Trudeau recognizes this, and cooperates it could bring terrific economical benefits to this great nation.

Trudeau clearly needs to take a stand for Canada and Mexico to ensure a fair trade agreement, but the relationship between USA and Canada is too vital to risk.

Overall, I think the PM should focus and highlight the fact that many jobs in both the U.S. and Canada depend on this trade and that the economies benefit greatly from it as well. However, NAFTA also often receives some concern and complaints and therefore a renegotiation may not be so bad afterall. Trump did in fact say to Trudeau that: "We'll be tweaking it. We'll be doing certain things that are going to benefit both of our countries”. Since Canada shares a border with the U.S., it is almost inevitable that the U.S. will be our largest trading partner, so Canada cannot help but be critically dependent on its neighbour’s economy.

I don’t follow politics at all and have a very small knowledge on the topic. But I do believe Justin Trudeau must stay strong for Canada and let President Trump know that his country comes first. He has to also let him know that if they were to renegotiate NAFTA it’d have to mean Canadians and Canada benefits. Trudeau also has to take in that since the US is Canada’s biggest trading partner not to do anything that’d trigger Trump and Americans that would have to make them cut off ties since Canada is critically dependent on its neighbor’s economy. But the best case scenario is Trump will actually bring up a new and approved version of the NAFTA which will be great for both countries then that'd be an amazing thing as the relationship with Canada and US grows and both countries benefit.

No matter what President Trump proposes, the bottom line is gaining mutual benefits for all NAFTA members. If President Trump is seeking better terms of trade for America, PM Trudeau should take the opportunity to solve trade issues and build a stronger pact with US.

The high dependence of trading with America puts Canada in a vulnerable position, as 86% of Canada’s exports is going to US, as well as US is the largest investor in Canada. PM Trudeau should consider protect Canadian business from American influence and control by proposing restrictions and expanding Canada’s trade partners.

Besides the merchandise trade, PM Trudeau should also be aware of Canada’s invisible trade. Canada has a negative invisible trade balance, as only half of the exports are natural resource products and manufactured goods, but most imports are manufactured goods. Similar to US, it results domestic jobs losing; further, Canada is mortgaging future by consuming natural resources. Together with President Trump, PM Trudeau should consider effective policies to create more manufacturing jobs in Canada.

In addition, due to Canada’s social structure as a welfare capitalism, the high taxation induces highly educated Canadians going to work for US, known as brain drains. PM Trudeau can definitely have a profound discussion on the efficient allocation of human resources among NAFTA countries with President Trump.

Unfortunately I'm not so knowledgeable on the topic, however I believe that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needs to enforce his willingness to securing a strong relation between Canada and the U.S, as well as Mexico. NAFTA or North American Free Trade Agreement has been making relations between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S much more superior by securing the economies together. Trump is a businessman, not a politician, and he will always try to get a "better deal". However, 57% of a Nanos Poll launched in January suggested Trudeau would stand up towards Trumps actions in protecting our nation, and I am amongst those 57%. Canada supports the U.S very much so by strengthening their economy; the two countries share approximately $1.9 billion a day in bilateral trade, one of the most popular being oil thanks to Canada's large oil sands. Canada deserves just as good of a deal as the any of the countries, and Trudeau needs to enforce that. I hope that Trump and Trudeau can maintain good relations so that the two neighbours can have a strong and wealthy future.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, must always keep Canada his priority and not allow new President Donald Trump to renegotiate the terms of NAFTA, to allow him to get a “better deal” out of Canada. This “better deal” will undoubtedly benefit America and for certain effect Canada in a negative way. Prime Minister Trudeau however must do this in a positive and polite manner, because unfortunately Donald Trump is running America now and they are our strongest ally. Mr.Trump has a history of being triggered by emotions and this could easily cause him not to deal with Mr. Trudeau and Canada, if Justin Trudeau must negotiate the terms of NAFTA with Mr. Trump then he must do it in a way that will not cause any significant changes to Canadians lives. After all it is possible for President Donald Trump to come up with a completely better deal which would end up positively affecting all three countries involved. With that said Justin Trudeau must maintain our strong relationship with Donald Trump’s America, as it is essential for Canada’s economy.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should consider a diplomatic approach which allows for a balance between the economic relationship among both countries, without compromising the integrity of fundamental Canadian values. He can achieve this by clearly defining Canada’s position on the Trump administration’s foreign policies, while simultaneously making an effort to uphold and continue the trade relations that are so interconnected with our economy. He has already done the latter, and what he can do currently to achieve the former is to persuade Trump to rethink a potential withdrawal from NAFTA. If the US were to withdraw from NAFTA, the economic implications on the Canadian economy would be devastating, and thus Trudeau and his administration must do everything in their power to prevent this. While Canada should maintain a close connection with America, it is vital to Canada’s reputation as a promoter of tolerance and multiculturalism, that we clearly exhibit our dissent to the decisions made by Trump. By creating such a balance, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be able to maintain a strong bond with America.

Canada needs to maintain a healthy relationship due to the fact the US is Canada's largest trading partner, but as well as our biggest ally. If anything were to happen to Canada in terms of a terrorist attack, the US would be able to defend and protect Canada when Canada does not have the capabilities. However, Canada needs to maintain close relationships with other ally countries who might not agree with the Trump Administration. It is a fine line that Prime Minister Trudeau must follow. In addition to the fact their core politics are on completely different sides of the political spectrum. Trump being far right and Trudeau being on the left side. Trudeau's politics are more similar to democrats.
