The topography of the Arabian peninsula is very rich culturally with it's buildings and naturally with it's oils and other natural resources. Most of it's land is in a desert area filled with sand dunes and little water. It is also home to some of the biggest petroleum miner countries. A major religious building located in the Arabian peninsula is the great mosque of Mecca that contains the Ka'ba.

The Umayyad Dynasty was started by Muawiya in 661 C.E. when the fourth caliph, Ali, got assassinated. Muawiya was only a political leader; he left the religious problems for religious leaders to solve.
The dynasty is split into two parts, the Sufyanids that reigned from 661 to 684 and the Marwanids that reigned from 684 to 750. The Sufyanids moved the capital city to Damascus. Muawiya appointed his son, Yazid, the next leader of the Umayyad Empire. Because of the deaths of Yazid(683) and Muawiya(684) because of civil war, the Sufyanid rule came to an end.
The Umayyad Empire reached it's peak under the rule of Abd al-Malik(685-705) when their armies conquered parts of India, Central Asia, and most of Spain. Arabic was also established as the official language.
The Umayyad Empire started to decline when the northern and southern Arab tribes' feuds turned into major revolts. In 749, the Hashimiyyah denied the legitimacy of the Umayyad rule. With the aid of the western tribes, they proclaimed a new caliph that became the first of the Abbasid Empire.
