Her drive and determination to help each and every patient that walks through the doors of the Lynn Women's Health and Wellness Institute is an inspiration. Dr. Schilling truly cares about her patients and advocates for breast cancer prevention, specifically annual screening mammograms. In an interview with OncLive Dr. Schilling states, "A mammography can reduce a woman’s likelihood of dying from breast cancer by up to 36%. It is important to remember that not just women can test positive for the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genes, men can carry this gene and pass it on to their children.
A recent study noted "people who inherit harmful variants in one of these genes have increased risks of several cancers—most notably breast and ovarian cancer, but also several additional types of cancer. People who have inherited a harmful variant in BRCA1 and BRCA2 also tend to develop cancer at younger ages than people who do not have such a variant" (BRCA Gene Mutations: Cancer Risk and Genetic Testing Fact Sheet, 2020). For this reason, an important prevention method when it comes to preventing death from breast cancer is to find out your family history and to have a genetics test if there is a family history of cancer, in order to reduce your risk of death.

The two most common types of breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma. Invasive ductal carcinoma is when the cancer cells form in the milk ducts and spreads throughout the rest of the breast tissue. Invasive lobular carcinoma is when the cancer cells form in the lobules, also known as the milk producing glands, and spreads throughout the rest of the breast tissue. If these cancers are not caught in time, they can spread further than the breast tissue and reach the lymph nodes and other parts of the body.

Cancer prevention is actions that can be taken to reduce the risk of getting cancer and increases the likelihood of a positive outcome with early detection.

Artificial intelligence utilizes an algorithm that can identify a mass before a physician can. For instance, in photos 1 and 2 that is what a physician sees, and can be harder to identify cancer. Artificial intelligence is beneficial when a patient has early signs and symptoms of breast cancer and has become an essential tool used to catch cancer early and prevent death.
