Background, Family, & Origin
According to the article, “Carol Ann Duffy - Literature” by Peter Straus, Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 23 December 1955. She is the first child, followed by four boys, of May and Frank Duffy(Straus). Duffy is of Irish descent as her Mother is Irish and her father had Irish grandparents. Her family had moved to Stafford when she was at the age of six (Straus). In Stafford, her father worked for English Electric and managed the Stafford Rangers Football Club(Straus).
Upbringing (Adolescents to College)
Growing up in Stafford, Duffy attended Roman Catholic primary and middle schools, and then Stafford Girls’ High(Straus). According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. “Carol Ann Duffy | Biography, Books, Poetry, & Facts | Britannica” Carol Ann Duffy started publishing poetry in magazines at the early age of 14(Britannica.org). Until the age of 16, she had romantically lived with Adrian Henri a poet and artist significantly older than Duffy (Straus).

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, “Carol Ann Duffy | Biography, Books, Poetry, & Facts | Britannica”, 1988-1989 Carol Ann Duffy was a poetry critic for The Guardian and an editor for the Ambit(Britannica.org). 1996, she lectured in poetry and became the creative director at Manchester Metropolitan University (Britannica.org). Carol Ann Duffy won the National Poetry Competition in 1983, and an Eric Gregory Award the following year(Straus). These initial accolades are what began to propel her poetry to the forefront of society(Straus). Thus, Duffy began to earn award after award as in 1985 Anvil Poetry Press became her publisher for Standing Female Nude, soon afterward her poem, Selling Manhattan (1987) earned the Somerset Maugham Award which was followed by several other awards(Straus). In 1996, Carol Ann Duffy was employed at Manchester Metropolitan University as a lecturer in poetry(Straus). At the time she lived with Jackie Kay and her daughter Ella, born in 1995, whose father was the poet Peter Benson(Straus). She went on to publish plays and poetry for children, as well as edit anthologies(Straus). The World’s Wife (1999) was Duffy’s last collection published by Avil Poetry(Straus). 2002 she published Feminine Gospels under Picador and Picador became her publisher from then on(Straus). In 1999, Carol Ann Duffy was considered for the position of poet laureate, however, the Prime Minster had opted for Andrew Motion after allegedly fearing poor reception of Duffy's homosexuality(Britannica.org). Yet in 2009, Duffy had received and accepted the position of poet laureate after Andrew Motion(Britannica.org). Thus after 400 years of history, Carol Ann Duffy was the first woman to maintain this position(Straus). Inspired by events of the COVID-19 pandemic Duffy put together the WRITE where we are NOW project with Manchester Metropolitan University to encourage people to have a better poetic outlook on the world(Straus).
