I think I have been prone to jumping to feedback/giving the answer to a question when there doesn't seem to be a lot of engagement rather than a) understanding why engagement might not be high and b) finding an alternative strategy. So the techniques for interaction in this module will be particularly helpful.

There are also things I hadn't necessarily thought about in terms of short-term and long-term memory that are also useful to my own learning...!

I liked learning about Maslow's hierarchy of needs and I think it'll be relevant to take into account these needs when teaching to ensure students get the best/ most successful learning experience. 

The unit has also highlighted the importance of not just lecturing a student in transmission mode but try and engage with them more so there can be more discussion and active learning. The unit also mentions giving students time to make sense of what they have learnt. It may be helpful to give them a way to get in contact at a later point if they have new questions. 

The interaction methods should also be useful. For example, Think-pair-share/Buzz groups could be especially helpful to take into group settings. This would be particularly useful for members of the group who may not be as confident to contribute otherwise.

- Emily]]> 2022-06-13 14:14:37 UTC https://padlet.com/mscvetedu/xxq5a2l0vci898n9/wish/2219607523 https://padlet.com/mscvetedu/xxq5a2l0vci898n9/wish/2219654779 This unit should have been as intuitive as unit 1 (I know I didn't find lectures particularly useful in retaining information!) but the classic way of teaching as a lecture has been so normalised and ingrained in society that I think its become all too easy to revert to the teacher doing the most work, and the learners being too passive. The idea of actively engaging each learner, especially in group settings, and how this can be achieved, is definitely something I will carry forward onto any future teaching I undertake.

The short- and long-term memory aspect was also very useful to think about as both a teacher and a learner!

The idea that there's lots of variation in people, and students, made me think about how to personalize teaching to individuals.

Also the video of the RVC students in small study group was effective. I need to think about how to engage with students that aren't contributing. Without effecting there hierarchy of needs e.g. asking them to say something - this won't make that student feel safe!

Learning about Maslow's hierarchy has made me more aware of students needs towards the lower end, to ensure and enable maximum learning can actually take place. This is something I will be planning into future teaching.

The techniques for interaction was also really useful, methods to ensure a safe and trusting atmosphere of learning, while also obtaining student input, for example brainstorming ideas where all ideas a valid and afterwards ranked.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs was great as it formalises the needs of the learner thats may be considered common sense. Short vs long term learning was really interesyed and I appreciate the concept from first hand experience

I'll have a read through the Mayford et al paper on Synapses and memory storage, it sounds very interesting!
