Flojac is designed and managed in the UK. The design is of high quality, durable and reliable and in line with NICE Guidelines around best practice. Flojac enables patients to be raised from the floor in a safe controlled manner. Flojac has a safe working load of 500kg. A wedge support is featured to support a semi recumbent position and add to patients comfort. Flojac is wipeable using Clinell wipes and has no removable parts. Flojac is easy to inflate and deflate and features handles at the head and feet end to enable close control of the device. Flojac minimise risks and helps prevent injury to users.

Falls in individuals with cognitive difficulties often result from a combination of factors. Cognitive difficulties can impair a person's abilities to perceive and respond to environmental hazards, maintain balance and recognise potential falls risks. Other important factors include medication side effects, musculoskeletal issues, postural hypotension and sensory impairment. Conducting a thorough and comprehensive falls assessment in patients with cognitive difficulties enables health care professionals to identify specific risks in the patients and develop targeted interventions to reduce these risks. A multifaceted approach to falls is crucial in achieving this.

It is also important that care givers/ family are involved in the care of the patient. We use the Butterfly scheme in this Trust to support people living with dementia. Caregivers can give valuable insights into the patient's behaviour, mobility limitations and specific challenges related to cognitive difficulties. This is especially important when the patient has difficulty expressing their needs.

Neurological Observations has two primary functions. These functions are the assessment of current neurological function and monitoring for changes in neurological status. The tool used to primarily complete the neurological observation is the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS).

Medications

Medications can increase the risk of patients falling

If your patient has any of the following symptoms you should request a medication review:

History of falls

Syncope (fainting)

Blackout

Dizziness

Polypharmacy: means more than 4 medications, ask for a medication review

Following a fall: re-do the multifactorial falls assessment and MDT review (including medications review)

REMEMBER!

If your patient is on 4 or more medications, request for a medication review

If your patient is on brain or heart medications, they have a higher risk of falls

If your patient had a fall, you have to re-do the multifactorial falls assessment and re-do a medication review. Taking note if the patient is on any brain or heart medications and if they’re on any anticoagulant medicine.

If you are not sure before you omit or administer a medication please discuss with a pharmacist or prescriber.
