As the mentor must be able to hear his or her mentor, the opposite must also happen. You, as a mentor, need to do the listening exercise and assimilate all the tips your mentor gives you. My experience has been various but the first meeting has always been quite informale asking the teacher what he she thinks about the school, what his her previous teaching experience is and if there is something in the practical routine that needs explaining. As first piece of advice I would say"Be confident and smile" students love this and it helps establish a bond with them, next would be plan, paln, plan: lessons, week work, month work: fix goals and decide how they may be achieved

When I perform pedagogical supervision in the context of initial teacher education, I think it is most important that all phenomena that occur and observe during the classroom be analyzed and discussed in order to improve teachers' teaching practice.
I think that an essential instrument for performing Pedagogical Supervision is the observation methodology and the recording instrument used in classroom observation. A good observation grid with easy-to-fill parameters allows for discreet class observation and is an excellent recorder tool. At the first meeting I think it is important to establish a close relationship with the trainee, showing the school to get to know the other teachers and maybe have a coffee with him to know him better.

Last year, I was mentor of a new colleague. So I helped her to organize her activities in classroom. I invited her to come and to observe my lessons. I gave her some of my documents.

My advice for a first mentoring session would be a friendly approach to the mentoree. It's easy to imagine that he/she will be maybe nervous, insecure or a little bit lost. Or maybe not! You are not making a job interview, so just invite that person to a cup of coffee and start with some soft conversation. "Why did you choose this school? Have you any experience in teaching? Have you met other colleagues around here?" could be some good starting questions. And then listen, listen and listen. Every piece of information can be useful to guide your mentorre though the new path you both are going to go through together.

In 25 yeras I have expererience different stages in my teaching practice. The thrill of the starting years was changed for a practical, reflective use of resources in the classroom. Along these several years of experience, I've done different types of mentoring (new arrivals at school, university students doing their trainships and also Comenius and Erasmus trainships).
Usually, since my school its very close to the sea, I invite trainees to go out of school, in the marina coffee shop, or just in front of the sea. This way, in a more relaxed place, neither mentor or mentee feel uncorfortable.... talk usually flows... like a "friends" meeting.
Even if discuss some topics related to mentoring activities, for me, its more important not to exagerate on the information during these first meetings.
Other tip is to present the trainee to key persons at the school. Its important to know other teachers that could also have an important role along the training period.
Thirdly, I usually ask trainees to do short briefings of each meeting, this way, main topics can be easilly remembered.
Usually, when these tips are followed, all the activities along the scholastic year are easilly accomplished and problems solved.

I think it's important to put the mentee at ease at the first meeting and state that it's a two way street and there will be learning on both sides. Acknowledge that you know they are both teaching and learning to teach. I try to emphasise that it's about progression and not perfection.

I think the mentor have to involve the mentee and give enthusiasm, motivation. I will say to adapt to the real moment and to show good practice, the methodology or strategies that is more convenient to use in different activities of that moment for real learning of the students. The advice would be to use different methodologies to answer to the different learning styles of the students. Then the other advice would be that working with the students to become good teacher and you become be able to use different methodologies along the process of learning to achieve the goal.

I think it´s fundamental to create a warm, supportive learning environment right from the beginning; making the mentee feel at ease, showing him/her the school facilities, allowing him/her to ask questions and to work collaboratively with him/her side by side. I have no mentoring experience but, as I tend to put myself in someone else’s shoes and all like to feel welcomed, I’ve often shown the school premises and village where the school is located to newcomers – be it a mentee or a newly arrived (experienced) teacher.
In any case, as an experienced teacher who has long been teaching in the same school, aware of the school environment and expectations, I would start by lightening up any existing tension by inviting the mentee for a cup of tea or coffee and by sharing some info of my professional life in order to make them feel at ease and understand that, being a lifelong learner, I’m also willing to learn, to share, to collaborate, to support – and be challenged. Just like with young learners in our classrooms so is with mentees (and all people, I would say): only in a stimulating environment and when confident enough, will true learning take place.

My advice to a colleague wanting to start a mentoring partnership would be to establish a trusting, respectful relationship first - once you have established this then discuss expectations with the mentee and possible outcomes for the mentoring sessions and reassure the mentee that it is a two-way relationship, you can both learn from each other. In the first mentoring session i would recommend active listening, sharing some of my own experiences as a beginning teacher and building that mutual respect and trust.

My advice is to find something new during the mentoring sessions and share experience during the collaboration with you.

A mentor should engage his or her target audience, motivate and entice them to make them realize that the goals they are proposing are achievable. This requires being up-to-date, adaptable and flexible, showing the best practices, methodologies or strategies most appropriate to use in the different activities to develop with your students. As a new teacher I didn't have a mentor to guide and help me at school. I had a feeling of isolation it took me quite a while to overcome. In my country there is not the pedagogical figure of mentor but supervisor, but only at an early stage of the career. After some years of profession we can work in support, (pairs) but still only in some disciplines.
The mentor figure is very welcome because it makes the teacher a lifelong student ... and that makes him or her update and recycle their knowledge.
If I were an experienced mentor I would tell the new mentors to
- establish a trusting relationship with the colleague
- help you find answers to your problems
- ask questions about their practice but without obsession and authoritarianism.
- learn from the practice of both .

As I said earlier in Portugal there is no figure of the mentor teacher. However, after several years of teaching accumulating experience in different teaching cycles, I find it very important to establish a relationship of trust in the first session. I would love to become a mentor of new teachers because as Professor Sharon Feinman - Neimser said in her interview it is a way of creating a collaborative community too. Thus, in my first meeting, I would try to make people feel at ease clarifying that it is only a way to learn from each other. Initially, I would have a friendly discussion to get to know the mentee as a person. After that, I would present myself and the work I do at school. It is important to show that you care for her/his needs and stress that both parts are going to benefit from the collaboration. My first advice would be to try everything what is offered. Instead of getting scared, get inspired. I'm currently a prentice and I have a great mentor. She gives me the opportunity to try all kinds of learning strategies (no matter if strategies fail), to get well known with documentation and to lead classes I have to, but also the ones with her. It is a great relationship of give and get. She is teaching me knowledge which only experience can give you, and I am refreshing her teaching strategies I've recently learned at university. Great example of mentoring, wish every future teacher gets the same.

As an English teacher I've never had someone to mentor or mentoring me but as I am also specialized in Speech Disorder and Audition and in that field, I've been able to be mentor to a girl who was doing her internship with me and I would say that first, you need to know a little bit about the other person: the trigger to study that degree or the reason why she wanted to become a teacher (in this case) and then, also, discuss about the different approaches that we could use to achieve the aims with our students. That way, you can easily find out how you are going to get along with that person at work. So, at the end, I reckon that both of us benefited from that experience as she had some new ideas from the university that maybe at the time that I had studied weren't on tendency. And she learnt new practical activities that she hadn't known until that time. During the first mentoring session, I would talk to my mentee about how things are usually done at the school, how it works, ideas that can be useful and so on.

For me being a mentor in not all that different from being a teacher. Of course the type of relationship and the power balance is different, but eventually what you want is to make the other person comfortable, confident and eager to learn, to do their best. It's important to be open-minded and also honest, to not be afraid of giving the right feedback, to say what can be improved but to be willing to help and share your knowledge and experience. Also, one has to be ready to learn and to accept different ideas.
For the first session I think it's important to be prepared and able to understand and discuss what the first lesson or the approach to the first lesson was like. But it should be done in a friendly atmosphere, with empathy and respect.
I can't find a way to vote, but from what I could read most people have mentioned similar ideas.

Talk to your mentee informally about what they are doing in life generally. Opening a conversation and finding some common ground has always helped me with mentees to understand each other better and guiding them better in their first year of teaching. Also give time to self reflect. Ask questions about how they feel about their performances instead of giving them feedback right away. This way you can understand the point of view or the way of thinking of your mentee better. Which will allow you to guide them even more efficient.

I think the best approach to take is to not present yourself as an expert in the education field but share ideas that would have worked well for you in the past.

P. Valer- Spain For my first day: Trust. You have to trust and the mentoree has to trust you and to believe that whatever you are saying is your real experience. There must be good comunication and the mentor should always show interest in what both can learn together. I am always excited when I get a new teacher to mentor as I know this person will bring new ideas that will help me as well. At the same time, I want to know whether I am far from reality, from the academic world or not that far. Also, the new teachers usually are anxious about what we expect from them, whether they will be able to perform what they are supposed to. I think the key is to be yourself, stay open, simple and calm. First session might be stressful, mentee does not always know what he/she wants from this, it might be very general and you should guide him through this too. The step stone to be set at the first meeting of a mentor and his mentee, is considerably building trust between the two bodies. The mentor need to be genuine and bring himself into a new challenge, open- minded and willing to help. Get himself to know through relaxed questions about his mentee partner and his expectations. Why did the mentee choose this school, what is he considering as attractive, what are his weaknesses and his strenghts. As it is alluded a cup of tea or coffee sounds always good for changing ideas and the first impressions. Both should be collaborative and share positive and negative experiences as an example for avoidance in the future.

I don’t have a mentoring experience but some advices that I could give to a colleague doing mentoring for a first time are these:

Introduce yourself, take the opportunity to say about some common experiences you may have with your mentee, ask your mentee why is he in that situation, what has brought him into that role, what does he enjoy in his work. Don’t rush to “solve” his/her problems and “give him answers”. “Answers” will come, they won’t be perfect, but surely some of them they will be helpful. Always try to be authentic. I believe that this is what remains and makes the difference. And of course, as Rachell Lofthouse points out, before the first session “do a little bit of homework to find out what is expected within the framework of the program of study, or the program of induction for your mentee”. Don’t forget to offer a cup of coffee or a cup of tea!

I guess it is important to stay authentic and show mentees to stay authentic in classroom too. It doesn't make sense to force them to be someone else to become a good teacher. Mentor's should be guides, giving hints to their mentees to interact in a personal way with the kids and also in teaching.

If I sat my sights on becoming a supervisor, general manager or executive, I could begin building the necessary skills today.
Football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price
which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Those wise words apply to my career, too.
It weren’t enough to want a promotion into a leadership position. I had to do the hard work to prepare myself and gain recognition within my organization, which is often easier said than done. But there were a hope.
I probably saw what would happen when the right criteria and clear measurements hadn’t been used to promote someone. It were
easy for companies to fall into the trap of promoting top performers.
If my goal were to rise up through the ranks to leadership, I would begin developing the skills and traits valued in leadership roles and gain recognition for being competent and capable. I would start with these seven signs of leadership identified by Korn Ferry:
1. A track record of formative experiences. Have you successfully handled any of the job requirements in leadership roles?
2. Learning agility. Have you taken what you’ve learned from previous experiences and applied it in different or new situations?
3. Self-awareness. Do you solicit feedback? Have you identified your strengths and weaknesses? Are you taking steps to improve
where necessary?

Most of what I think has already been said but I would maintain that being a good mentor means that you are prepared to build on a relationship which even though is professional it is still based on human interaction and has to be open, supportive and based on trust. So getting to know each other on a personal level is mandatory. Another important factor is establishing the goals of the relationship, what the mentee needs and how these goals can be achieved. Finally, mentors should realise that they are not required to have the best or all the answers; they need to guide the mentees to the discovery of their own solutions.

I would say "the path is made by walking" however, the people who accompany us can play a very important role in this journey. It doesn't matter if they are older or younger, it matters what they can share with us, what they can teach us ...
Collaborative work is essential to "growing up". We should not be afraid to ask questions, to say that we do not know yet, to ask how it is done. Essentially, we should reflect on our practices, observe our students' performance and evaluate the results. Are we getting it? Are they getting it? If so, then we are on the right track!

Football coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Those wise words apply to my career, too. It weren’t enough to want a promotion into a leadership position. I had to do the hard work to prepare myself and gain recognition within my organization, which is often easier said than done. But there were a hope. I probably saw what would happen when the right criteria and clear measurements hadn’t been used to promote someone. It were easy for companies to fall into the trap of promoting top performers. If my goal were to rise up through the ranks to leadership, I would begin developing the skills and traits valued in leadership roles and gain recognition for being competent and capable. I would start with these seven signs of leadership identified by Korn Ferry: 1. A track record of formative experiences. Have you successfully handled any of the job requirements in leadership roles? 2. Learning agility. I could develop all of these qualities. I didn`t need my manager’s permission or company-sponsored training to begin upgrading my qualifications. It were not the time to be humble. I would keep written documentation of my successes, and as you begin improving my skills in these areas, document them, add these successes to my resume and professional profile, and share them with my colleagues. In fact, schedule regular conversations with my colleagues to lay out my successes, goals and expectations. The meetings would give me a chance to highlight my achievements while also giving a reality check on my goals. And they loved it. it contained a coupon for a coffee brought to them by another colleague, a coupon for a peptalk for those times when they have doubts. and a few funny things :-) But translating them into English is not possible cause the clue is gone then. Also make sure that what you discuss or share with them is written also. Cause they get an overload of information the first weeks... and if they can have a written document so they can go back to is usefull. Also "dose" the information, meaning don't overload them with everything the first day/week... take it step by step. You as a mentor should regularly go and check if all is oke or if they have any questions. Give them positive feedback when possible. Everyone likes to feel appreciated!

To start mentoring I would invite mentee to my classes and then give her/him opportunity to comment and talk to me about things I have done and how I have done them. So instead of commenting on her/his work I would give the mentee an opportunity to share observations. This conversation would provide a lot of valuable information about the mentee.
