Your challenges & objectives for a peer support programme by EUN Partnership aisbl

As part of your action plan you need to identify challenges that you would like to address through a peer support programme and identify objectives of what you aim to achieve. To effectively implement a peer support programme it is of course essential to be clear what it is one wants to achieve with it. Therefore let us start out this module by sharing our challenges and objectives for the peer support programmes we plan to implement in the future. We will then follow by looking at three example challenges and how to implement a peer support programme to address these. Write a brief description of the challenges you face in your class or school and how you believe a peer support programme can address these challenges.

Challenges that students face in my school are lack of motivation and social isolation. In almost every class there is at least one student that is isolated from the rest of the class. Also because this is a trade school and some students are not interested in the trade they are studying there is a problem with a lack of motivation. We also have quite a few students with learning disabilities that could use aditional help from peers in learning school materials.

We realize that students in our school lack cooperation in the form of help and support. For example, we hear from some students that when they ask a question about school assignments in groups like WhatsApp, they don't get an answer. We understand that this is partly about the diffusion of responsibility, but it is necessary to emphasize the importance of peer support.
A peer support program would also help isolated students, those who are shy, socially anxious and those who lack social skills.
Finally, I would like to emphasize that this program could also reduce bullying because it would encourage understanding, socializing and shared pleasant experiences.

This can lead to lack of engagement in school activities, and difficulty in academic achievement. A peer support program can help address this challenge by providing a safe and supportive space for students to connect with their peers and receive emotional support.

Additionally, some students may struggle with academic or personal issues and may not feel comfortable seeking help from adults or professional counselors. A peer support program can provide a confidential and non-judgmental avenue for students to seek support from their peers who may better understand their struggles.

Furthermore, a peer support program can help to promote a positive school culture and reduce incidents of bullying and conflict by empowering students to build positive relationships and resolve conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding.

Most of our class groups have cliques formed that result in social isolation of some students. Our school offers one general education program as well as three trade programs - this often creates a sense of being 'less worthy' among trade students. Finally, there is a general lack of motivation among our students and a rise in mental health problems such as social anxiety and depression. A student support program could be a great tool for empowering students who are shy, anxious or have low self-esteem and encourage them to take charge. Student support program could also raise our collaboration skills and improve the social interaction among groups.

Challenges would be individual motivation and support. We could overcome the challenges of a peer-to-peer program if in the classroom mutual respect is important, rules are followed, all parties take responsibility, and all share a spirit of justice and a desire to help others. The conversational tone should be friendly, the atmosphere characterized by cordiality and warmth, with room for cheerfulness and a sense of humor. Have as many learning situations as possible that are not related to assessment
performance and only so many achievement-oriented situations.

The biggest challenge I face at school is the lack of motivation among students - students aren’t interested in their education and do not see the purpose of education. During high school, they mostly imagine that they will be able to do some job on the Internet for which they don’t need much knowledge and from which they will earn a lot of money. However, there are students who are aware that education is necessary to find a well payed job , so they study seriously. I believe that this is a strength that could be used to motivate other students, by including successful students in peer mentoring as peer support for learning, which would be the first goal of the program.

Another challenge is the fact that students mainly socialize through social networks - young people today mostly spend their time communicating virtually. For this reason, the second goal of the peer mentoring program would be the realization of activities through direct communication in workshops of different content, according to the choice made by the students themselves.

Challenges I most commonly face while working with students with and/or without learning disabilities are lack of:
- engagement/ motivation for actively participating in the educational process/ extracurricular activities. When looking into it we have found that often the reason for it is an „inert group/class climate“.
- teamwork/support often as a subproduct of the challenge listed above. Both coud be adressed with peer support programme; including the class as a whole in fun, active, problem solving workshops. Those could also adress the problem of
- isolation some shy students face, giving them chances to work in smaller groups and get to know each other in a „structured environment“ that provides a needed kind of safety. The same could help students with learning and/or other disabilities that often face the same problem. Workshops would ephasize their individual strenghts (we have identified), giving them a sense of belonging and being an importaint part of the group, not just an observer.
- learning/ learning habits a lot of students haven't developed effectively, working with peer suporters they will change learning patterns and gain
- cofidance in their abilities, so their social and emotional difficulites will also directly (by peer advices if estimated by school psychologist could be beneficial) and indirectly (gaining schoolwork/homework confidance) be adressed.
