I have always wanted to be one since I was a little kid. I have always loved being in the water and learning about marine life.
I had the chance to go to Maui, Hawaii this winter break and do research on humpback whales.

This is a photo of an Island Oak located on Santa Rosa Island with its roots exposed from severe erosion as a result of overgrazing. A Cloud Forest once occupied the upper ridge of the island where fog would condense on the vegetation, watering plants below. With the shrubs denuded by non native animals, the water that falls from these remaining oaks now runs off into the canyons below. The Cloud Forest Project began in 2015 to restore this area on Soledad Ridge by utilizing wattles to control further erosion and re-establish natural soil processes. By installing propagated natives, their roots will help hold soil in place and leaves will once again capture fog to help restore the damaged hydrologic cycle. I have been fortunate to be involved with some of the restoration projects on the islands and it has been the most rewarding work I have ever conducted. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue that work once I graduate, working on Phase 2 of the Cloud Forest Project for California Institute of Environmental Studies.

I feel like California's parks have shown me a lot over the years of my life that they are not just a site for people to enjoy for the sake of tourism, but they also represent the true body of the state. Parks are preserved for their nature and their biological processes they give throughout the environment. If we were to loose these parks, it can lead to serious consequences that can affect local natives and endangered species. This does not just apply to California, but everywhere around the world. Many spots across countries hold certain values that pertain to the cultures and wildlife around them. This is why preservation holds a deep importance to me.

I have looked into many different areas of environmental science, but the ocean still appeals to me the most. I am not exactly sure what type of research I would like to be involved in. I'm sure the first few years out of college will be interesting as I will defiantly be taking any sort of work that comes my way. Over the winter break I was able to study humpback whales in Hawaii, and nothing has made me more sure of what I want my future to be. There I discovered a new passion for whales and admiration for the people who are currently fighting for our planet's health. I hope to join them soon doing whatever I can.

After I graduate, I aspire to work within the marine conservation field and apply some of the technology skills, I have developed at CI. Being a researcher and working with marine life has been a dream of mine since I was a young child. Over the winter break, I had the opportunity to begin that journey and assist in the Keiki Kohola Project in Maui and study humpback whales. Here I assisted in behavior following, photography, and was even able to fly a drone and capture my own footage for the project ( another goal, that I have been waiting for). The picture above is me in action, getting ready to shoot some shots of a mother and calve. I enjoy mixing my hobby( photography and videography) and my love for marine science. I anticipate to involve myself in more marine wildlife research and the application of drones in that field. My first goal is starting where I believe it needs my help the most, that being marine and coastal management of our oceans.

Right now, I really want to get into riparian restoration through natural means, beavers specifically. Since I starting research beavers at CI I became fascinated with these chunky rodents. It's illegal to relocate them here in California so methods, like the one shown above, need to be used to attract beavers. The image shows a beaver dam analog (BDA), which are man made dams that are used to, hopefully, attract beavers to an area. Beavers bring so many benefits with them, like raising water tables, increasing groundwater storage, increasing biodiversity, and our research shows they can mitigate some damage caused by wildfires (although currently it's hard to determine how much). These are all things that we, in California, need as droughts and wildfires seem to be worsening each year.

Soraya Viteri - I have been conflicted on what I wanted to purse once I graduate. I am leaning towards marine biology work. Once i graduate or sooner i am hoping to land an internship in any type of marine field work. This summer i am planning on getting my scuba license so hopefully that will increase my odds of an internship soon. I would like to do some research on corals if i could.
