The First Years Last Forever by Michele Bonna

1. Describe an interaction with someone during which you felt that you were really “heard.” 2. Describe an interaction with someone during which you did not feel that they understood and listened to you. Describe how you felt during each interaction. These are good examples of interactions that are (or aren’t!) responsive, reciprocal, and respectful. Think about how frustrated an infant would be if no one paid attention to his or her needs or listened hard enough to know what the needs may be. 3. What is the importance of the interactions that are needed to respond to infants’ needs?

One time, I was feeling a little depressed, and I don't know why I thought it was a good idea to share with my mom what was going on. We were sitting in the living room, she was sitting across from me, and she was leaning in the begging for the first 5 minutes. Then, she started looking through the mail that was on top of the coffee table. She kept me, “I’m listening.” while she interrupted mid-sentence that she had to pay her electric bill. I decided to switch topics because I knew she wasn’t listening. She ended the conversation with, “Was that all you had to tell me.” like what I had shared wasn’t important. (A.S)

Basically, when I was in High School still I was having a rough time getting to adapt and the hang of things of what adulthood will look like. I never was really talkative with anyone at my school because I was nervous. Most teachers in the school that saw me quiet expected me to talk and even at that I would not participate. So, when my dad picked me up from school, he heard what had happened previously then it became a big issue. I got yelled at and told off on so the only person in my house I went too for comfort was my grandmother. She was dealing with cancer for a very long time, and she continued to fight for all of us in 2017. I wanted to be able to tell her everything in private and I did so we spoke which from there she heard me out for what really went down and happened. I do miss her wishing she was still here with me.

It is important to be able to listen too infants. You want to give them that sense of reasoning in knowing that they can rely on mom and dad to be there for them. Children as infants should gain the love, care, and protectiveness. Once you do that you can realize and notice the change in behavior of what happens. It is wise that you protect them in order to keep them safe. (Creelin)

When I was younger I got into many arguments with my grandma. She raised me and since she is old school, I was raised with different rules than my friends. One example would be, staying out late with my friends was not allowed. She believed that when it got dark out I should be at home because “ when teenagers are out at night they get into trouble”. My friends got closer to each other because they hung out more. They invited me to hang out less because they knew I had to be home early. When I got older I calmly talked to my grandma instead of getting annoyed and yelling. I explained to her that I never gave her a reason not to trust me and that I was missing out on things with my friends. She let me stay out a little later from then on, not much later but still I felt heard. She took my feelings into consideration and we found a way to compromise.

According to the video, using touch is very important to a child's development. Another important action is communication, verbally and non verbally. Attention is also very important in a child's development. Another interaction would be“ face to face paradigm’ with an infant. Also how and what you say affects the child's brain development. Exposure is important. What you say and how you say it, is teaching the child and preparing him or her how to speak. Comfort is important but so is letting the baby learn to comfort his or her self. For example if a baby is crying, for a little bit of time, wait and see if they stop on their own. If not, you go to them and soothe them. Routine is Very important for a baby and child as well as reading to them. The constant attention forms an attachment with the child and the person. A clean environment is also important and healthy for the baby and child. It is also very important to take care of YOU and “not fall into super parent syndrome”. Having good energy affects the child so don't be afraid to ask for help. “ The more you learn about babies the better parents you'll be”
