In January 2012, Cruz and his longtime girlfriend, Elaina Watley, became parents with the birth of their daughter, Kennedy. Then he proposed to her 2 years later.
In December 2012, just before a game against the Atlanta Falcons, the football star honored 6-year-old Jack Pinto, a big Cruz fan and one of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, by writing Pinto's name on his cleats and gloves. Cruz then presented the gloves and cleats to Pinto's brother, Ben.

The son of Michael Walker, an African-American firefighter, and Puerto Rican–born Blanca Cruz, young Victor came up in a Paterson that was dominated by gangs and drugs. Opportunities, especially for young boys of color like himself, were few. There was alot of crime going on in Paterson. It was not the easiest thing for him. In high school  he starred on the football field as a kick returner and wide receiver. But college boards denied his chance at scholarships so Instead, after graduating in 2004, Cruz enrolled at Bridgton Academy in Maine, where he did a postgraduate year to boost his academics and continue to play football.

Victor's heritage comes from his mother that is puerto-rican. Victor Cruz was a hero because he lead his team to the super bowl and won. He was embarrased that he had to live at home again so he decided not to go out much, but worst of all his dad committed suicide that year as well. After that day Victor knew he had to be the man of the house and he also started taking college more serious.The next fall, Cruz re-enrolled at UMass. On the field, Cruz turned himself into one of the most acclaimed receivers in the program's history and finished in the Top 10 in several career statistics even though he played just two seasons as a full-time team starter.
