Blended Learning is a way for students to have more ownership of their learning. Goal setting and mastery mapping help students know what the end result should be and how they are progressing towards it. Pre and post assessments allow students to show what they know and what they have learned and helps guide teachers in their instruction. Choice boards allow students to choose how they learn or how they demonstrate their learning. Finally peer tutoring can help students internalize their learning by helping those around them learn the content.

There are many different iterations of Blended Learning which gives us an opportunity to individualize based on our student needs. In turn, this allows for self pacing and student choice. “Meet students where they’re at.” We must be careful, however, as some of our students lack the support structure and self discipline to follow through on their own at times.

Blended learning and self-paced learning offer significant benefits for students, enhancing their educational experience in several ways.

First, blended learning combines traditional face-to-face instruction with online resources, providing a flexible learning environment. This approach allows students to engage with content at their own pace, catering to individual learning styles. For instance, students who grasp concepts quickly can advance more rapidly, while those who need extra time can revisit materials without the pressure of a strict classroom schedule.

Second, self-paced learning empowers students to take control of their educational journey. This autonomy fosters motivation and responsibility, as students can set personal goals and work through challenges at a speed that suits them. This flexibility not only reduces anxiety but also encourages a deeper understanding of the material, as students can spend more time on topics they find difficult.

In addition, both methods support differentiated instruction, allowing teachers to tailor their support to meet diverse student needs. This personalization helps ensure that all students, regardless of their starting point, have the opportunity to succeed.

Overall, blended and self-paced learning create a more inclusive, engaging, and effective educational experience, preparing students not just for academic success but also for lifelong learning.

Blended and self paced learning can be beneficial because it allows for the students to be constantly active and not have as much time to become bored. I am not 100% sure how to apply this to my class since I have so many classes at one time. My first step would be to move them into groups based on their classes and try to encourage them to use each other as a resource.
