Gonorrhea AKA "the clap" is a reference to the French word "clapier," which means brothel, a place where STDs such as gonorrhea can be transmitted. It describes an early treatment for gonorrhea, which was clapping a heavy object on the man's penis to get pus/discharge to come out.

Gonorrhea is usually treated with antibiotics, most often a shot of ceftriaxone given in the muscle. Sometimes, doctors may also give a pill like azithromycin if there’s a chance of other infections. It's important to take all medicine as directed, even if symptoms go away. Sexual partners should be tested and treated too, to stop the infection from spreading or coming back. People should avoid sex until the treatment is finished and a doctor says it’s okay.
