These poor condition caused some of the soldiers to have medical problems like trench foot. These trenches were used to house soldiers during their time to fight in the war, they were like the home base. The trenches included pests living in them as well, rats, lice and frogs. These pests got into the soldiers food and would eat about everything. The lice was a huge issue as well, the lice would make the soldiers ich horribly and cause a disease called trench fever. The weather made the conditions worst. The rain would cause the trenches to flood and be filled with mud which didn't allow water to pass through. The mud would get stuck into the weapons which would make the weapons stuck. Trench foot was one of the most common "diseases" in WW1. If trench foot could not be treated they would normally amputate the foot. Afterwards if there hadn't been an assault the soldiers gathered for inspections, breakfast etc. Following all that soldiers undertook any number of chores, ranging from cleaning latrines to filling sandbags or repairing duckboards. During daylight hours, they conducted all work below ground and away from the snipers searching rifles. Soldiers also read, kept journals, wrote letters. Nighttime in the trenches was both the busiest and the most dangerous. Under cover of darkness, soldiers often climbed out of their trenches and moved into No Man’s Land, which was the landscape separating the two armies. The soldiers had to be away from there families and had to deal with the worst conditions and has little food and had no freedom which I wouldn't be able to do I coulnt stay awa from my family for that long. The trenches were a awful space and I was super interested in this topic and I want to continue learning about it. It was very interesting to read how the trenches were used and who they were used by.
