During WW2, for the first time in Canada, women were allowed to enlist in the war. 50 thousand applied with more than half enlisting in the army (21,600).

The government allowed the enlisting of women to happen after a shortage of men on the battlefield, the women's goal was to help men with their everyday needs so more men can go out on the battlefield and stay out there for longer periods of time

Most of the women who did enlist were assigned to cooking, doing the laundry and cleric duties; some were even assigned to roles in the mechanical and technical fields.

Fast forward a couple of years, and a lot less women are enlisting in the war, women who once was planning on joining the war changed their mind after hearing stories on the battlefield of their male allies mocking them for being there, causing a shortage of soldiers.

But soon enough, the male soldiers realized how important the females are in training, respecting the women working with them, and showing that women aren't that weak after all.

Sources:
https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/canadian-womens-army-corps

https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/history/historical-sheets/women

Separate from CWAC, WRCNS (members also known as wrens), the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service was a similar organisation to the Women's Army Corps. and both worked alongside each other during WW2.

Wrens were trained at HMCS Conestoga at Galt, Ontario. The building, ironically, was a vacant girl's reformatory school. Women who selected to become officers underwent further training at Hardy House, Ottawa. A total of approx. 7100 women became wrens.

One of the graduates of the first course at Hardy House, Lieutenant-Commander Isabel Macneill, was appointed commanding officer and became the first female to command an HMC ship.

The WRCNS went on to also serve in the Korean war.

https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/womens-royal-canadian-naval-service

https://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/history/historical-sheets/women

When the war started, only about 600,000 Canadian women had jobs, and the CWAC opened up a lot of different avenues for Women to get jobs, and help their country. During the war, women had roughly 1,200,000 jobs, double the amount of jobs. If women were into knitting, they could knit socks, and mittens for the soldiers. If a woman was passionate about something related to the war effort, they could do it, work in the CWAC, and get more money to live and support her family.

At the beginning, society was afraid of the erosion of traditional moral and femininity. However, CWAC proved that their work would help bring soldiers home sooner and that they were capable of performing their tasks.

CWAC's biggest accomplishment has to be its historical significance to Canadian women. CWAC was a big step towards equality between men and women in Canada's military and society in general.

https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/canadian-womens-army-corps

In September 1939, Canada joined the war. Within months “Unofficial” Woman Corps had many members across the country. Many women in World War 2, joined groups like Women’s Volunteer Reserve Corps and Canadian Auxiliary Territorial Service. On their own time they would focus on military related courses like morse code signalling and map reading. Some groups learned “regulation infantry drill” and some canada trained the Women’s Volunteer Reserve Corps in arms drill and physical conditioning. These women wanted to be treated as equal and serve their country just like a man would.
