They said it was unconstitutional
- "the Morrill Tariff" taxed imports to the united states and was very unfair to the southern states
- passed in 1861 by James Buchanan
- The morrill tariff increased the taxes 20 percent on certian goods and 10 percent on raw materials
- Congress authorized a 30 percent tax on luxury items
- the govt. enacted the tariff to raise revenues during the civil war
- internal improvements beleived that the govt. was supposed to help make peoples lives better
- the largest impact of these improvements was to link rural farmers to markets
- the congress ordered construction of federally built railroads
- the system was an attempt to put govt. money and power behind improvements like roads and railroads
- Southern POV
The south is against taxes and tariffs because it favors the North more than the south. The north relied on it because they were more industrialized while the south still relied on slave labor.

- The Debate was over what powers the state had and the federal. This was a heated debate between the Federal and the state; which led to if the newly territories should be allowed to have slavery.
- The south believe that slavery was necessary and a positive good thing to have around.
- The Missouri Compromise was basically brought peace between the north and the south which divided them only temporarily; due to both having different perspectives.
- The North believe that all states should be non-slave-holding states; The South believe that all states should be slave-holding states.
- Southerners felt that the laws favored the Northern. The Southerners also felt that they will slowly be forgotten due to all laws being for the better of the North and the worst for the south.
- Southern fear the Northern because the Northern had a "conspiracy" to end all slavery; or at least the south thought this.
- When Abraham Lincoln won presidency in 1860 , The Southerns believe that their economy was going to be destroyed.

Southerns POV
- They were against States rights/ popular sovereignty
- The north was trying to destroy their economy
- They needed slaves to help keep their economy running
