According to McGonigle and Mastrian (2018) many nurses that became specialist in nursing informatics were nurses that were comfortable with computers and technology, they did not have any formal training. These nurses were the go to people when others had difficulty using computers and technology, often these nurses learned by on the job training or taking classes. Today there are two certification options available to nurses to specialize in Nursing Informatics. The first is through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the second is sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). 

Nursing Informatics as a Specialty adds another scope of practice for nurses to specialize. Nursing practice has grown from the traditional bed side nurse taking care of patients in a hospital to many specialty nursing fields. Nurses that are tired of working long hours at night, on weekends and holidays have other options available with the addition of nursing informatics and other specialties. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the nursing job market is going to rise by 26% by the year 2020 and the American Medical Informatics Association state that 70,000 nursing informatics specialist/analysist may be needed in the next 5 years.

Below are 5 ways informatics helps with managing all the data collected:
1.  Accuracy: New systems allow for information taken directly from machines connected to the patient to be recorded simultaneously into the EHR.
2. Ease of Storage: With the introduction of Information systems, more patient information is able to be stored. Since organizations are able to store records electronically instead of needing a physical space, no patient information needs to be destroyed. Information also has a less likely chance of being misplaced.
3 Better Organization: Information is now able to be properly categorized and placed within patient chart without the risk of human error.
4. Simplify Communication: Using Information systems, such as the EHR, allows for faster and easier clinician to clinician communication.
5. Patient documentation- Devices are able to auto record information to improve accuracy. All information is also stored electronically and is easily accessible to all healthcare providers.
2. Reduces Cost from Medical Errors- It is reported than medical errors cost the healthcare industry nearly $40 billion each year. With using information systems, the risk of making a mistake is greatly reduced. With hospitals saving money from reduced medical errors, that money can be put back into investing into more technological advances to enhance patient care and comfort.
3. Improved Coordination of Care- Since all the same patient care information is on hand, providers can access records faster and make better decisions for caring for the patient.
4. Efficient Workload for Nurses- With more technology being able to streamline everyday nursing processes, it allows the nurse to have a lighter workload. The ethical dilemma with using EHR’s is data breech amongst healthcare providers and outside entities. According to an article written in the LA Times, 1,040 patient records were breached over a few years, and 165 employees were disciplined within the UCLA public health system. Researchers believe with better education of staff on policies/laws, increased funding for IT to implement better security, and simply no peeking will help with preventable events of unethical data breeches.

Nursing informatics requires documentation as a major emphasis in order to improve communication with other healthcare providers. Nursing informatics focuses on improving quality of care, patient safety, and controlling healthcare cost. Today’s healthcare system is moving to a high technologic infrastructure, computers have replaced paper for orders, notes and interdisciplinary communication. Healthcare providers no longer need to be in an actual building to see how a patient is doing or check on the most recent laboratory or test results. 


Challenges
Nurses trained prior to the technologic explosion had to adapt and be willing to learn new skills that seem to come easier to the younger generation of nurses. Experienced nurse informaticists also experience challenges such as creating the foundation of a nursing informatics system Pope, K. (2018).
