The way Kingsolver is writing this passage is showing how Leah is trying to help out her sister but Ruth May isn’t acting like her usual ecstatic self.  She also uses small comments from Ruth May to show that she is not in a bright mood.  Ruth May either makes small replies to Leah or doesn’t say anything after she is spoken to.  The repetition of Leah wanting to help Ruth May is used to show how she is a persistent person and truly wants to make Ruth May feel better.  After cheering her up with the lion ants fails, she continues to find new ways to help her out.  She offers to comb Ruth May’s hair while she sat in a swing.  Ruth May had continued to not say much and did not respond to Leah’s proposal.  The difference Kingsolver is trying to show through this passage is how Leah and Ruth May’s relationship in this scene is reversed.  Leah is usually not the one who would be trying to cheer up her sister while Ruth May is not usually the one to be upset or in a bad mood.

The process of  making the one pager showed me how I related to the characters in that they were always looking out for each other when one was down.  I decided to choose this little scene in the middle of the book because it was simple but showed Ruth May that was not her usual self.  This led to Leah as an older trying to cheer her up by doing things that Ruth May would usually enjoy.  Leah was always looking out for her family but this scene showed the little details she did to help out Ruth May.  Leah is showing her compassionate self to a gloomy Ruth May in order for her to return to her outgoing self.  The pictures were to go along with what was happening in the scene or what they were talking about.

The project focused on Leah and Ruth May because Adah and Rachel were often seen as the different ones.  Rachel was narrow minded and somewhat selfish while Adah was intelligent and disabled.  This created them as entirely different characters from the rest of their family but I chose Leah and Ruth May to make the project unique and show how Ruth May and Leah are usually similar but in this scene are different than their usual selves.  Making the project made me realize all of the small things throughout the novel to help each other out and how different the characters could be from their usual selves.
