For more than 50 years scientists have been trying to create a more efficient and easy way for people that live with insulin dependent diabetes to control their disease. For most people, they would have to check their blood sugar multiple times a day and then give themselves insulin injections based on their blood levels and their carbohydrate count. This leaves a lot of room for human error. Hypoglycemia is one of the most dangerous complications of this system. To help prevent these events from occurring so frequently, researchers have finally developed a system that helps eliminate human error and the number of needles a person must endure in a day. In 2016, the US FDA approved the first artificial pancreas for use. The device includes a continuous glucose monitoring device, an insulin pump, and an algorithm that controls the system. The algorithm can be changed based on illness, physical exercise, or increased carbohydrate consumption.

As nurses, this would be helpful in an outpatient setting. Patients would be able to give accurate records detailing their glucose and insulin need trends. Nurses could then help provide lifestyle counseling based on those records. If the technology is able to send the information to a cloud that is then accessed by a provider they can call patients if they are noticing unsafe trends in their blood sugar levels or insulin usage in a prompt timeframe.

I think this is a wonderful technology for people suffering from insulin dependent diabetes. I have multiple friends with the disease that have to work extremely hard every day to take care of themselves. I would love for this technology to become more widely available for the public to use. I can see where this technology will help so many people in their day to day lives. It will make them safer and more compliant with their treatment.
