He was the only god with a mortal parent. Semele was in love with Zeus, even though she couldn't see him. Hera, Zeus' wife heard about the lovers and decide to visit Semele in disguise and convince her to see what her lover looks like. Later when Zeus visited her again, she made him swear by Styx to grant her one wish. Zeus was madly in love with her, so he agreed. Semele then asked Zeus to reveal her his true form. Zeus was not happy happy knowing what was going to happen, but he had no choice and showed her his true form. In an instant, she was burnt to crisp by the sight of his glory. Zeus quickly saved Dionysus and stitched him into his thigh until he was ready to be born. Because Zeus gave birth to him, he is granted with immortality. Hera, still jealous of Zeus and Dionysus, told the Titans to kill him. The Titans ripped him to pieces, but Rhea brought him back to life. Then, Zeus arranged his protection, and gave him to the mountain Nymphs to take care of him. He then wandered the world and spread his cult. His followers worshiped him in the woods. There they go into a state of ecstasy and madness, making them to rip apart and eating any raw animals they might come across with. Dionysus is one of the few god that were able to bring a dead person back to life. Even when he has never seen Semele, he went down to the Underworld, faced Thanatos, and and brought her to Mount Olympus. Under the influence of wine, one could feel possessed by a greater power. He was not a god that could be worshiped, he was also present within his followers, a man would possess supernatural powers.
