Henry, a member of the Tudor family was born in 1491 in Greenwich. Seven years after his father died, Henry VIII was crowned king. He ruled England for 36 years. He died in 1547.

He may not have been the best king of all time, but he sure was an interesting man.
Henry had six wives:
·   Catherine of Aragon - divorce
·    Anne Boleyn - executed
·    Jane Seymour - died
·    Anne of Cleves - divorce
·    Catherine Howard - executed
·    Catherine Parr – died

The Pope did not really like the divorce and cut off contact with Henry. Henry was expelled from the Catholic Church and became the leader of a new type of religion called the Anglican Church. They were Protestants - different from the Catholic Church.

Henry died on 28 January 1547 and was succeeded by his son, Edward VI.

Henry VIII was Elisabeth I. Father. Elizabeth I is one of England's greatest monarchs. 

· She was called The Virgin Queen, because she saw herself as wedded to her country.

· Francis Drake was an English explorer, privateer, naval officer, and politician. The Sea Dogs were a group of sea-raiders and privateers who were authorized by Elizabeth I of England and active from 1560-1605.

· Critics have traced Elisabeth I. role as subject of or inspiration for such works as Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queene and others. Elisabeth was the author of only a few poems and translations.

· In The English theatre the male actors used to dress as females. The theatre was open and plays had to be performed in daylight.

William Langland

Peirce Plowman
  • Peirce Plowman gives a dark picture of Middle English society and becomes a kind of paragon of Reformist thinking. 
  • The work is a composition of many dreams, each on a different theme, and in sum they become the image of humanity in the midst of the struggle between Truth and Evil.
Geoffrey Chaucer
  • He was born in 1343 in London. 
  • He died in 1400. 
  • He was an English poet, writer, linguist, philosopher and politician. 
  • His works were influenced by great Italian authors such as Dante or Boccaccio. 
  • The most famous works are the Canterbury Tales. 
  • Other well-known works include The Book of the Duchess, Troilus and Criseyde.
Canterbury Tales
  • It is a cycle of 24 stories. 
  • The author originally intended to produce 120 short stories.
  • But the work remained unfinished. 
  • It is the journey of a motley group of residents to the tomb of Thomas Becket, located in Canterbury.
  • They cut their way through the storytelling.

The Black Death was a plague pandemic. The pandemic probably came from China in 1347. 

The plague was spread by fleas living on black rats traveling on slave venetian ships. 

Symptoms included fever, nausea, vomiting, bruising in the groin, throat and armpits, which leaked and bled when opened.

In 1348 the Black Death came to the British Isles.

There was taken following measures: people were less in contact, masses were held outside the churches and the sick weren’t allowed to be touched.
