[inequality] matters a great deal that millions of middle-class families buy houses they can't really afford, taking on more mortgage debt than they can safely handle, because they're desperate to send their children to a good school--an intensifying inequality means that the desirable school districts are growing fewer in number, and more expensive to live in (564)

A bad start can and can't ruin a child's chance of life, like for an example living in poverty, that child could want to be something in life and improve their life style. Which high school they go to doesn't really matter. What they do after their high school career is what really matters.

I have to disagree and say that all education is not the same. I grew up in a poor district that had very few resources and very crowded classrooms. Despite amazing teachers, they could only go so far from their students when they were even limited to the number of photocopies they could make. When I moved to a better district I was amazed that the teachers had computers and there were TV's in the classroom and computer labs and internet. It was like hitting the lottery.

"... the number of families filing for bankruptcy each year was five times its level in the early 1980s. the proximate reason for this surge in bankruptcies was that families were taking on more debt and this led to moralistic pronouncements about people spending too much on luxuries they can't afford... middle class families were actually spending less on luxuries than they had in the 1970s." (564)

this is an example of inequality in the United States and it goes back way before the 2000s , what was actually happening above is that middle class was deeply struggling to survive, which is the minimum you should have be able to live. Society wants equality on everything, but the main focus is money.

Money defines every step of every person in a society, middle class at that time was struggling because they are the people that will not receive any financial help, because they make enough money to live decently and are not well enough to live in the luxury that they want. So middle class suffers the most in any period of time.

Inequality is almost impossible to decrease, the minority in power of the money will not give it up so all of us can have the same things. people in general always wants to be better than the other, so equality is not something that we really seek entirely, because if any of the majority struggling group was on the position of the minority rich people. they certainly would not want equality.
