“They sat together in a window whose lattice lay back against the wall, and displayed beyond the garden trees and the wild green park, the valley of Gimmerton, with a long line of mist winding nearly to its top (for very soon after you pass the chapel, as you may have noticed, the sough2 that runs from the marshes joins a beck which follows the bend of the glen). Wuthering Heights rose above this silvery vapour; but our old house was invisible – it rather dips down on the other side.”

Above the chimney were sundry villainous old guns, and a couple of horse-pistols, and, by way of ornament, three gaudily painted canisters disposed along its ledge. The floor was of smooth, white stone: the chairs, high-backed, primitive structures, painted green: one or two heavy black ones lurking in the shade. In an arch, under the dresser, reposed a huge, liver-coloured bitch pointer surrounded by a swarm of squealing puppies, and other dogs haunted other recesses.

Often in literature, a character's house can tell a lot about them. In this case Trushcross represents Edgar’s personality very clearly. The house is very sofisticated, neat and elegant, just like its owner who is known as an educated, mannered, and wealthy man. The house reflects Linton himself, and it also symbolizes the comfort and wealth that Catherine would have living there with Linton.

In contrast, Wuthering Heights symbolizes the turbulent Earnshaw family and mainly Heathcliff. Dirty, dark, hostile and messy. Also symbolizing Catherine’s destiny if she continued to live there, specifically with Heathcliff.

Chapter 3, p. 10 (kindle), describing the guest room used by Catherine - " had a few mildewed books piled up in one corner; and it was covered with writing scratched on the paint. This writing, however, was nothing but a name repeated in all kinds of characters, large and small—Catherine Earnshaw, here and there varied to Catherine Heathcliff, and then again to Catherine Linton."

In chapter VIII, Nelly describes Catherine behaviour as “Catherine had kept up her acquaintance with the Linton’s since her five weeks’ residence among them, as she had no temptation to show her rough side in their company, and had the sense to be ashamed where she experienced such invariable courtesy [...] In the place she heard Heathcliff termed ‘vulgar young ruffian’, and ‘worse than a brute’, she took care not to act like him; but at home she had small inclination to practise politeness that would only be laughed at, and restrained an unruly nature when it would bring her neither credit, nor praise.” In this sense, after spending five weeks at Thrushcross Grange, Catherine is influenced by the new environment, almost changing her personality completely, as if Thrushcross Grange brings her a sense of civility that in Wuthering Heights does not exist.

This would be the case for two reasons: (1) the Lintons have a big staff taking care of the place, (2) and these characteristics normally convey peacefulness.

The surroundings are green and laden with natural elements, such as the garden, and the garden tree (and multiple others). Although the Grange is isolated from the urban life and probably lacks people around (e.g., neighbors), it is still alive due to the presence of natural life.

Furthermore, since they are wealthy and have several services at hand, we also suppose that everything in the surroundings suits perfectly (the plants and the hedgerows are trimmed, there are cobblestone paths, and the windows are covered with window box flowers)
