We had very little money and had been stuck as peasants for generations. Under the Qing dynasty things were pretty stable at the time and nothing much changed for my family we were simply stuck as peasants with no way to improve our socioeconomic status. Opium became so popular due to the British necessity to close their trade deficit with China. As Opium was important in river towns like ours in Hubei everyone became involved in the trade. It was highly addictive which a destructive effects on society. The farm where my family works was abandoned by an opium addict and as a result, turned my family to the streets where we became even more impoverished by addiction. Looking at countries like Japan and the powers in the West most if not all have done away with monarchy transitioning into a republic. As a peasant, I have little say in politics but if enough people get together change can be made. Yuan Shikai led China from 1911 to 1916 under the Nationalist party. Under his rule power was decentralized giving provincial warlords more power. My family has mixed feelings about this because while we have more legal freedom, we have to fend for ourselves more in order to find work/money. But because of the decentralization of power and the dominance of countries like Japan China felt like it was weak post monarchy. Shikai dies in 1916 and the era of the two parties is born. The two parties are the Nationalist Party (KMT) and the Communist Party (CCP). Both parties represent branches of communist ideologies, this is exciting for my family because communism gives peasants an opportunity to live at a higher standard of living in a more structured/regulated system.
