1. I believe our entire team worked together immediately. We all contributed ideas for the structure and added points to further support our structure. This helped with the process because we were all open to each others ideas and tried to make it work. Overall we all contributed equally and managed to build a tower without a clear decision on who would be the leader.
2. Collabration looks like a calm productive group of people. There could be a leader but it's not necessary. There is no excess sound pollution and everyone hears everybody's thoughts and ideas.
3. The plan for the structure was quite simple. We started off with a tepee design because we agreed it would be the most effective in holding a marshmellow at the top without falling over. After the initial structure, we all added to the tower making it stronger and taller while maintaining the structure of the tepee. I belive a plan would be benificial in building a tower and would have made our tower better however, our tower was stable and held the marshmellow in the end.
4. I learned a lot during this activity because i was able to reflect on my collaborative skills. I usually take the role as the leader in the group but this time i decided to step back and work together in a different way. I learned that there are many different ways to collabrate effectively as well as how i like to collabrate.
5. The next time my group could have came up with a plan and worked from that. Overall i think we had a good plan and executed it effectively.

1. There wasn't much organization structuring, we embraced a 21st Century organization paradigm by incubating a flat organizational structure. However, since three of us have very different skills, we took on different roles in building process without any assigning. These roles help significantly as there are many components to our structure and building them together will result in a waste of time.

2. People coming together with different skill traits, talents and opinion but still able to work in harmony to achieve the best result.

3. Planning would have resulted in reduced construction time, and a more effective use of materials.

During the short eighteen minutes of this fun yet educational challenge, our team experienced many obstacles and conundrums during the process. The result did not turn up as well as we had expected, but there are many lessons for us to be learned from our failure. To begin with, our team did not organize itself very well for our task. Although there were a lot communication around us, we did not come up with an effective plan. Our objectives were unclear, and we did not establish an efficient method to achieve our goals. Relatively speaking, we had a little bit of problems in our collaboration. We had some different opinions and ideas and we could not decide on one solution until the very last of the challenge. As I have mentioned, or team did not have a clear plan for building out structure, and that has resulted in the ineffective building process after. We really struggled during the challenge. If we could have a second chance, we would have definitely taken another approach at planning. I really learned that I lacked collaboration skills in this challenge, and the one thing that I think I can work on is definitely my skill to taking the leader’s role and making suggestions.

1. To be very honest, no form of organisation occurred within our team. We spent a lot of time on the planning stage and fooling around so as a result, our final product failed to stand on its own. Initially, we planned on building a structure together but the plan was soon ditched and I was the only person building the structure. If we actually attempted to establish some form of authority within the group, I believe the end result will be drastically different. The implementation of roles within our group will be even better as no chaos and confusion will ensue with what should each individual member do.
2. Collaboration involves active discussions and participation from each team member. A collaborative team should look like a group of people huddling over the table while participating in discussions concerning the topic.
3. Our team did attempted to make some form of planning but it quickly downturned into a heap of nonsense. I believe our lack of planning hindered us from making any actual progress in the project. If we could implement some more plannings in the beginning of the project, the end result will be very different.
4. I need to learn to work with all sorts of people in the future, no matter if they are cooperative or not. I tend to prefer to work individually as I will have complete control over my project and if the teacher specifically requested the project to be group based, I would normally take up the role of the team leader. I failed to do so in this project.
5. Effective communications among all group members as well as the fact that all of us need to stay on task instead of drifting off into nowhere. Roles will also be split among the members and we should also have a team leader that will provide us with detailed instructions.

Initially, i tried to take a leadership role and get everyone moving, but once everyone was working together, roles became irrelevant as we were usually all working together on the same task.
2. Collaboration is when people work together effectively and constructively. If you hear lots of shouting and arguments, you are not hearing much collaboration.
3. Our plan changed once or twice, but generally we had a good idea of what we wanted to do with our structure.
4.

1. Our team started brainstorming the shape and look of the base and later built off of that. We were working as a collective, no one really had any roles. Roles may have helped if we were given more time, but I feel like 18 minutes is not really enough time to start assigning roles to people, especially with the concern of potential conflict.

2. Collaboration looks like people busily working together on a set goal, and it sounds like everyone talking and discussing ideas with each other constantly.

3. As mentioned in question 1, the only real plan our group made was what the base would be, and as we spent time on construction we would build off of that central idea, so not that much planning was done - for good reason, 18 minutes is not enough time to start planning anything advanced.

4. I learned that with communicative and presumably intelligent team members, I can easily get my ideas across, listen to the opinions of others and start working based on everyone's best interests.

5. For the next collaborative activity, I should be spending more time prototyping and planning with the desired end product in mind throughout the process instead of at the very end - assuming that I have the time to do so.

-Justin C

1. For my team, we decided to do most of it together. However, knowing that I am not the best at physics or engineering, I let my other teammates do more of the constructing, while I listed some ideas that might benefit the structure. Overall, we did came up with the ideas together.
2. Different people have different ideas. In my opinion, collaboration is always accepting, being able to incorporate ideas from different people to improve the experience for everyone involved.
3. There was not much planning for the structure. The only planning we did was deciding what was a stable base to use to keep the structure standing. I think that sometimes having no plan is better than having a plan. Sometimes, spontaneous actions are what creates a joyful experience for the group mates.
4. Throughout this experience, I learned that other's input is really important as I do not know much about construction. Also knowing your group is very important as it makes the process easier.
5.
Collaboration and Self-Learning

Alexander Mak

I found that our group delegated various tasks when it came to building the actual tower. This proved useful, as I personally have shakier hands than the other group members. This evaluation of strengths and weakness contributed to our success, as the application of our ideas was closer to our plans. I would like to further extend this delegation to planning the structure if we had more time, however I feel that with the time given, delegating planning roles could have taken up a lot more time than we had.

2. Collaboration is constant motion, it is an entity that is fluid and shifting based on our learning and experiences. Due to this rapid change, it is essential that collaboration involves the frequent exchange of ideas, feedback, and concerns. Our group tried to apply this principle by taking each step of the building process and letting everyone voice their opinions before moving forward
3. Planning helped us establish a rapport between various group members that contributed to an open, inviting group atmosphere. However, planning did take up the majority of the time. For high pressure situations in which time is of the essence, I feel we could afford to actually plan less.

4. I learnt that I can work best by better understanding my group members and their unique experiences. Through this knowledge, it was much easier to delegate tasks. As a result of this realization, I hope to improve my communication skills so that I can better develop an understanding of my peers within a group.

5. For the next collaborative activity, I would like to be more strict with ensuring that each task of the activity's process adheres to our time restrictions. This means that coming into the activity, I am more cognisant of the time we have, and let my planning/steps reflect this. Process is key to success, but a flawed process will seriously hinder an end result of any kind.

I think we worked pretty well; we contributed ideas and we would designate people to rip the tape, hold the spaghetti sticks, and others would assemble the structure together.
2. Working together in harmoney with an open mindset and considering all possibilities.
3. Using knowledge from past experiences and background information, we already knew what wouldn't work and what would. It also helped to observe the other team's progress and how we could draw inspiration from it.
4. I think I find myself naturally taking a leadership role in the team, and sometimes I have to watch myself from being too "bossy."
5. Our original structure was very stable, so what we could do next time is to think more about the height using the same method we did.

1. Our team did not have specific roles that we assigned. In the first seven minutes of the challenge, we sat down and talked about how to make the structure stable as the spaghetti is a weak base for a marshmallow. Having no specific roles helped everyone to talk and communicate so that we could improve it as we went along.
2. Good collaboration sounds like respectful conversation between all group members. It looks like work getting done efficiently while still holding its quality.
3. There was no plan to the process, and I think that it actually helped us. In the last minutes, we worked very hard and made good decisions to have our structure stand and be stable. I thrive off of pressure and can do work very fast when I have a time limit, so I think that having no plan really helped our group.
4. I learned that I get a long well with other people and can have people come to a decision quickly to produce a good end product. I learned that I am a good leader but also a good worker and take instruction well from others. I also know that I am able to receive different ideas and be open-minded.
5. I think I can working on managing my time better. Even though our structure was stable and we built it quite fast, it would have been better to plan out the timing of everything so that we would be more relaxed and improve our design/end product even more.
-Francesca Hauser

In reality, collaboration looks like the extroverts are the only group of people who have a say while the introverts are unable or too nervous to input to their group.
Collaboration Questions-Annette

1. Our group first started out by spitting out all the possible ideas that we had about how the tower could’ve been built. One group member brought up the idea of using a triangular pyramid or tent structure. This idea was approved by all members and then we started building. During this process there were no strict roles allocated to each member, however there were tasks completed by each member. The tasks would sometimes change depending on circumstances such as time. For example two people would mostly deal with the tape but near the end of the challenge when we were running out of time, more people helped build rather than to deal with the tape.
2. Collaboration looks like a group of people becoming involved in a task. This can be seen through many people working together to try and tape the structure down. It can sound like multiple voices throwing ideas onto the table or many people communicating ways in which the tower can be improved. Although, in the end there is no set guideline to what communication sounds or looks like.
3.Our group did not go into building the structure with a detailed plan about what we wanted to build. Instead we had an idea of the shape of the structure that we wanted. A plan would’ve have been more useful because it would’ve allowed our group to work out how we were going to use all of the resources that we were given, since we did have spaghetti left at the end. This could’ve allowed for a taller structure.
4.Througout the activity, I learned that I like to be more hands on in a group setting meaning that I wanted to be a part of physically building the tower. This can be due to my learning style and how I usually process things better when I am involved in the learning.
5. Something I could’ve worked on during the collaborative activity would have been making sure that all members of my group would’ve have been more involved in the physical building because more hands could have allowed for more ideas that would have made our structure taller.

1. My team first talked together about possible ideas and then immediately started to build to not waste time. We all helped build the structure while talking about improvements and the next steps constantly. We did struggle a bit at the end because of the time pressure and we did not know how to make the structure taller while also being stable.
2. Collaboration looks like everybody is participating and compromising. The end result should be the same for each individual, whether it is achieved in the end result or not.
3. We did not have a solid thought out plan before we started building, we came up with a structure along the way. I think there should have been a plan from the start by drawing a quick sketch of what we wanted the result to be. This could've saved time and let us become more successful.
4. I learned that I am a good listener and can work well in groups if i am comfortable with the people I'm working with. I also learned that I like when everyone is included in the activity and actively trying to strive for the desired goal.
5. For the next activity, I could work on organization and and more communication. Although our group did talk about what we wanted to build, I feel like more idea sharing and opinions would only benefit. In terms of organization, having a solid plan while also being able to adapt to unexpected circumstances is a good skill to learn.

Sabrina Chan

Roles did not affect success.

2. Collaboration involves a group of people working on the same task and achieving the same goal. Collaboration should look like a team of passionate people working together while putting their differences behind.

3. Such as help with ripping apart tape or holding the untaped structure. The process was well organized. I personally believe in the short amount of time, and the size of the group, roles are not necessary.
2. A good collaboration to me means everyone receive equal amount of work and conflict would not exist.
3. The planning process of building the tower was basically each member create a visual of the tower in the mind and explain it to the group, and decide which is the most feasible.
4. i think this activity does not reflect everyone's collaboration skills completely because of the short amount of time and the limit amount of challenges faced.
5.

1. First we brainstormed different ideas and applied previous knowledge that we had acquired about structures and triangles to come up with an idea that we presummed would be successful. Once we started building we ran into various issues and worked together to come up with the right solutions. We didn’t have many distinct roles other than the builder and the helpers but if we had more managing roles it may have made the process easier.

2. Collaboration is working together effectively and efficiently to reach a like-minded goal. Collaboration often envoles problem solving and working with others that you may not be familiar with. You have to get past any social barriers and try to complete the problem at hand, using all your strengths to work as a team.

3. Our planning wasn’t continuous and never ‘ended’ in a sense. When pondered on previous knowledge we had acquired about structures and proposed various ideas until we came up with a satisfactory plan. As we started we building we had to adapt or plan to fix problems we incountered which shows that planning is never a fixed process.

4. I learned that I’m very reliant on others to contribute. Often I will take the helper or assistant role in comparison to a more leadership role. This could be that I lack in confidence or that I don’t want to let my team down.

5. I want to work on contributing more and not being afraid to give ideas and take a more leadership role. Also encouraging others is something that I want to work on to do more of for next time.

1. How did your team organize itself to accomplish the task? Were there roles - did this help with the process? If not, would roles have helped?
We began our process by making a rough sketch on paper whilst evaluating the most effective approach to the challenge. It was quickly realized that triangles are the most stable and sturdy bases for all structures. We did not have defined roles but were allocated to contribute to the same roles in order to maximize efficiency.
2. What does collaboration look like and sound like?
Collaboration is achieved through mutual and equal consideration for all opinions. All individuals should contribute to the process and come to a compromise through such.
3. How did planning help with the process? If there was no plan, should there have been?
Planning is necessary in the building process as it provides all individuals with a basic idea of what the final product will be. Without such, everybody would have different visions and make a structure that is not sound or reasonable. Our team did have a vague plan, as mentioned prior, we wanted to use triangles and attempted to make the structure stronger by taping the noodles to one another.
4. What did you learn about your own collaboration skills throughout this activity?

I realized the value of being a follower and not always taking lead. Most of the time, I like to take charge of challenges but realizing the necessity for equal contribution allowed me to understand how necessary a fair environment is in reaching the final product.
5. What is something you could work on during the next collaborative activity?
I should have provided more insight early on to prevent mistakes later in the process. Although the time was limited, allocation of roles may have been helpful in efficiency. Next time, I will attempt to consider more than one possibility for an effective product. An open mind is key to success.

Due to the fact that there was a time limit and a common goal, we directly started from the beginning. Some people came up with the idea of holding the marshmallow and some people started from making a base. And this are the two most important fundamentals of this task. After we completed the basic structure, we started to think about how to increase the height of the structure. I think for future task , it is also very efficient to complete the fundamental first and then pursue higher standard. But it will be better if we have a plan at first to avoid possible failure.

1. Our team started off by building what came to mind first, which was a triangular tower. We stuck with the idea, as we came to an agreement pretty quickly. There weren’t specific roles and we eventually figured that it was difficult to have more than one pair of hands on the structure. So, there was mainly one person assembling the structure while others were assistants to that person. During the process, we were consistently imputing ideas that we thought of on the spot.

2. Collaboration looks like a group of people working efficiently on a project. It sounds like several different voices contributing to ideas or one person directing everyone else.

3. We didn’t think too much in the beginning which was why problems later occurred. By the time we realized that our structure wasn’t tall enough, we were running out of time, and could only make the statue stronger rather than taller. I think it was difficult to create a plan for this task because no one really knew what the best structure would look like.

4. I learned that I tend to take on the role of a follower better than a leader. However, with the short amount of time we were given, I think we could have been more successful if everyone acted as a leader.

5. I think I could spend more time planning and considering more possible options. I need to be able to put more ideas out there.

Alec McAlpine Marshmallow Reflection

Our team did not really organize itself into roles. We all worked together to design and build the structure to support the marshmallow. There was no real leader either to direct the group; everyone was a contributor. This lack of roles did not noticeable hinder the group this time but may have under different circumstances. We all generally agreed on how to build the structure and everyone thought of valid improvements that would improve it.

Collaboration looks like a group of people all paying attention to each other. People are making eye contact and working together to to, in this case, build a structure. Collaboration does not sound like an unfocused flurry of words where everyone is unintelligible. Nor does it sound like a graveyard where no one talks. It is the midpoint between the two where only one or two people are talking at a time and everyone else is attentive and listening.

There was a basic plan in the beginning that was improved upon as we built. I think this worked only because the first, basic plan was relatively successful. If it wasn’t successful, we would have had to come up with a new blueprint. I believe this is better than making a complete plan before building because if the idea doesn't work, we didn’t waste too much time and it is easy for us to start again.

While collaborating, I tend to be more quiet and prefer to come up with ideas rather than execute them. I can be a leader if I believe that one would be beneficial to the group but I don’t seek to be so. I think I am a relatively effective worker as part of a group as I contribute and will execute on others’ ideas.

I would like to work on advocating for everyone in the group to share all of their ideas. It is important for everyone to feel confident in their ideas and not have to fear them being rejected. All ideas, even potentially poor ones, can be constructive. Unrefined ideas can become refined when everyone gets the chance to examine and improve upon them.

1. As soon as we sat down, we started spitting ideas. After we ran out of steam, we considered our options and democratically selected a design. There weren't really any "roles" so to speak, and I doubt people shoehorning themselves into set roles as opposed to all helping out to work for the same idea.
2. It's subjective, so what one person thinks good collaboration looks and sounds like will be different from person to person. From my point of view, solid collaboration is a group of people focused, respecting each other, working on a task or a problem, making sure all voices are heard, and all assets and talents from every person are utilized to their fullest potential.
3. There was a plan. We very quickly agreed on a pyramid. After it was constructed, we then threw around miscellaneous ideas for improvement and worked on them on our own after it was greenlit by the rest of the group, such as extra struts for support or a pad to hold the marshmallow in place.
4. Not much. I'm a very social person by nature, and love to do collaborative work and do so at any opportunity, and just went through an entire course last semester based around it (business management).
5. I think collaboratory-wise, our group was pretty good. Our biggest fault was not building the tower tall enough, and I was very exhausted so I ended up making too many bad jokes slowing our group down sometimes.
Daniel Solokhine

1. Did your team organize itself to accomplish the task? Were there roles - did this help with the process? If not, would roles have helped?
We did not specifically organize ourselves to accomplish the task, whoever had an idea spoke up and whoever was in the position to help with the structure contributed. Although this did not cause conflicts or disagreements, having roles may help improve our process. For example if someone was incharge of tearing tape, one was incharge of taping while another was incharge of holding the structure in place. This would help us be more efficient because we would be focused on a single task and roles would be divided equally.

2. What collaboration look like and sounWhatd like?

Collaboration consists of peaceful and civil conversation, listening ears, and an open mind. It is very difficult to collaborate with others if you are not willing to listen to what others have to contribute, therefore being flexible with your ideas and plans would be a very important trait to display when collaborating with others.

3. How did planning help with the process? If there was no plan, should there have been?

My team did not come up with a concrete plan prior to building our structure. We had a rough idea of how we would like the structure and instantly started the building process. I believe that there should be plan, if a plan is drawn or discussed within a group of individuals, everyone would be working towards the same goal and be able to clearly contribute their concerns or opinions regarding the plan.

4. Whatdid you learn about your own collaboration skills throughout this activity?

I learned that I am not a very vocal person. If another group members is willing to be a leader, I would choose to follow the leader rather than challenge their thinking.

5. What is something you could work on during the next collaborative activity?

Something I could work on during the next collaborative activity would be to participate more by sharing my opinion as oppose to waiting for other group members to complete these leadership tasks.

Team members: Michelle, Rachel, Colin

1. Did your team organize itself to accomplish the task? Were there roles- did this help with the process? If not, would roles have helped?
My team did not specifically allocate roles to each member. However, it was clear that Michelle was our team leader. She gave the rest of my team and myself directions and we followed her instructions. I believe that it is important for any successful team to have a leader to direct the activity.

2. What does collaboration look like and sound like?
In my opinion, collaboration looks like people listening to each others' ideas, giving feedback and constructive criticism, and contribution to the group's goal. Collaboration sounds like people bouncing ideas off of one another, and every team member's voice should be heard.

3. How did planning help with the process? If there was no plan, should there have been?
My team came up with a rough sketch prior to building our structure. Michelle came up with the basis idea, and we all pitched in our ideas. I sketched out a rough draft of our prototype. Then, we followed the sketch and set to work building the structure.

4. What did you learn about your own collaboration skills throughout this activity?
Throughout this activity, I learned that I work well with others when we share a common goal and when under pressure. In this scenario, we were all driven towards the common goal of winning the challenge. With only eighteen minutes to build our structure, we were pushed to work together. The result was successful.

5. What is something you could work on during the next collaborative activity?
I believe I could work on taking a more active role during the next collaborative activity. Although we did not specifically allocate roles for this challenge, Michelle was our team leader. I usually lead when circumstances require me to, however, I take a background role when somebody more vocal wants to lead. Being more vocal and active is something I could work on.

Kirsten Jang (second reflection) 1. In our group there were no specific roles, but we would contribute our ideas in attempts to come up with a plan. We all contributed our ideas in some way and using all our ideas combined together it did not turn out successful. Having roles may have helped a lot more in terms of our success.2. Collaboration sounds like lots of voices giving their personal opinions and suggestions. Collaboration should not have any arguments and instead have positive feedback in attempts to try and use everyone's ideas by not negatively turning them down. Everyone should be working well and doing their fair share of the work.3. Planning helped us contribute and plan off of everyone's ideas. It would then help us come up with our final structure. 4. This activity didn't teach me about much collaboration but it helped re-enforce ideas of contributing your own personal opinions and others.

5. What we could work on as a group was keeping with one idea because although everyone pitched in good ideas we never stuck with one and everyone was each completing a different part of the structure possibly leading to the downfall of it.
