Woolf frequently discusses gender issues throughout her novel, mostly about men being favored over women. This was a problem in society during that time period. Being a college student now, I do not notice the same problems with women being seen as inferior. When Woolf discussed herself in a college/university setting, it was almost impossible for Woolf to have the same opportunities as a man. This is not the case now.

Woolf was a writer who wanted to have the same opportunities that men had during her time period. Throughout the novel, she battles with the fact that everything is dominated by men, especially the writing world. She felt as though she could not pick up a book that was not written by a man. Although times have changed, I can connect to how she feels about this situation. I find that, now, many years later, most books are still written by men. If this was put into a different context, if I was not allowed to play a sport in college because I was a girl, I would also struggle with this because my gender would be getting in the way of what I love to do and what I am passionate about, similarly to Virginia Woolf.

Virginia Woolf killed herself in the middle of writing a book because she could not overcome all of her own personal obstacles with trying to be a writer in the time period. Our society has improved with sexism, however, we have worsened with other issues. Whether it be race, sexuality, or another present issue, individuals still feel this sadness that Woolf had to deal with because she was not accepted into society for what she wanted to do. She could not express what she was passionate about. As much as these time periods differ, similar problems still occur today. Individuals cannot overcome barriers that are not their fault, leading to disastrous events, such as, in this case, ending one's life.

I believe Le Moyne has chosen this book due to our society's present day issues. During the time period, sexism was very prevalent. Presently, our society is struggling with issues, such as racism and sexuality. Our society is not very accepting of change. Similarly, during the time period of Virginia Woolf, it was not accepted for women to have the same rights and opportunities as men. This was Woolf's biggest struggle throughout her life. Although, I did not find this book to be very interesting and I found it to be quite confusing, I support their choice in a book. It allows the reader to connect society's issues back in that time period to issues now.

"In her posthumously published novel, Between the Acts, Woolf experiments with suspension of historical time as an aesthetic tactic that frustrates the eagerness of anti-war activism" (Weber, p. 20, para. 3).

This link gives ten little known facts about Virginia Woolf's life. For example, before Woolf was seven, her mother was already teaching her Latin, French, and History. Although these facts aren't very important, they are still interesting and a part of her life. This fact particularly shows that Woolf was very smart, especially at that young age. Her novels prove that she was very knowledgable but this interesting fact supports that statement.

This article discusses why Virginia Woolf should be your role model, due to her feministic views. Because A Room Of One's Own is mostly about Woolf's struggles with being a women during the time period, this article offers reasons as to why she should be who you look up to when it comes to being a woman in society. I read this article and I found it to be quite interesting and resourceful. I believe Woolf is a good role model with this topic.
