Answer the following:
  • the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself) 
  • speaker: Macbeth 
  • The one spoken to: Lady Macbeth
  • the context (what was happening at this point in the play)  
  • Macbeth was planning to kill Duncan and before getting in the mindset of murdering a king, he seeks counsel from his wife. Macbeth also doesn't want to kill the king because king Duncan is a good king who has done nothing but good to Macbeth, so Macbeth fears having to kill Duncan 
  • Analyze this passage from the New Historicist perspective. (Hint: Why would Shakespeare emphasize that the King is good in this play?)
  • Shakespeare wants to emphasize that the king is good in the passage because England had recently gotten a new king and Shakespeare didn't want to get in trouble by dissing the king. Shakespeare's purpose is to suck up to the king in order to convey a good message about the king.
  • Because it emphasizes the fact that a king is not necessarily powerful, but we need a person in power to maintain order.
  • All in order to secure the idea that the king may not be the best but the king is good and is necessary in maintaining peace and order.

  • How did the time period in which the work was written affect how and why it was written? (Think: who was in power at the time Shakespeare wrote this?) At the time Shakespeare wrote this there was a king.  That king was named King James the first. Shakespeare was forced too write plays that would make people believe that the king deserved that power and that defying the king would only allow your own destruction. The point of the plays are too keep people in check and realize that he is a true king.
  • How does placing the piece in the context of our time period affect its meaning and how it is perceived?
    • In the context of our time the writing the writing can be seen as sucking up to king Duncan. Back in the day it would just be a story that everybody believes and will believe or else they would die. Now when people believe it they can read and criticize allowing for us to see a better picture of why the book was written. Now it is seen as a book to say how you shouldn't kill the king but back then they saw it as a story of how you shouldn't hurt the king.

Power no longer is controlled by one person, it maintains by itself.

    The Story of Macbeth shows the chaos that could have happened if James didn't take the king. 

    It was Shakespeare's knowledge of his time and his knowledge of knowing what was acceptable to write that made him such a good writer.

    The New Historicist perspective is important to view literature because it explains how and why an author writes something. The Time period something is written influences the text and it also shows how the text relates to our time and shows the differences of our time to the time written. Through New Historicist, we can see how different time periods affect literature and how literature changes overtime.
