After the death of Ashoke, the entire Ganguli family goes into shock. Gogol and Sonia both leave their busy lives to come back and spend time with Ashima, and to be around each other to cope with the loss. It is at this point where we see the relationship between Gogol and Maxine become slightly distant. 
Maxine wants Gogol to “get away from all this” and go on vacation with her, but Gogol refuses as he wants to spend time with his family and mourn the loss of his father.

We start seeing Gogol slowly facing everything he's avoided and start to accept that he's a Bengali and embrace his Indian Traditions. There is a gap building between Maxine and Gogol and their misunderstanding slowly starts to take a toll as Maxine doesn't understand Gogol's Indian Traditions and at the same time Gogol is separating and distancing himself from Maxine because of his appreciation of Indian culture. He does this because he does not want to leave his father’s apartment empty but in my opinion Gogol might be subconsciously trying to disobey Maxine since he feels like it's her fault that he does not spend time with his family anymore and that they were enjoying while his "father was taking his last breaths". This is a significant pivotal moment in the story for Gogol and Maxine’s relationship due to this new misunderstanding between the two of them. Gogol begins to distance himself from her, and Maxine’s alienation from his newfound appreciation for his Bengali heritage is what drives them apart.

Gogol is in disbelief when he gets to the hospital. We can see that he is trying to comprehend the death of his father when he asks the doctor “are you” but then quickly changes his sentence to “were you my father’s doctor”. This makes the audience feel sympathetic towards Gogol. Moving on to the scene where the doctor asks Gogol to identify his father, Gogol feels unsure and a little but disgusted about looking at his father and about what he is supposed to do. When he looks at the body he feels like this isn’t his father because “his glasses are missing” but inside he knows that it is his father. When Gogol “grazes his father’s mustache, an eyebrow” he feels like those parts of his father aren’t dead yet but they are “quietly living”. Jhumpa Lahiri describes Gogol’s reaction in a way that he still has hope that his father is alive. When Gogol goes toward his father’s car “there is no sign of his father” which makes his feel like Ashoke is wiped away. Ashoke’s death negatively affects Gogol. Gogol feels like there is still a chance that his father is alive and that people are getting rid of Ashoke’s traces.

He didn’t feel the need to value her as much as he should have valued his father. Gogol ‘is accustomed to obeying her(Maxine)’ and promises to do what she says. Despite making a promise, he completely ignores her and decides to do what he feels is right. When Maxine comes to visit, Gogol doesn’t bother to explain anything to her in spite of knowing that she feels out of place, how he has always felt surrounded by so many Bengali people, knowing that his father's death 'doesn't affect her in the least'. This starts to indicate a change in Gogol's personality and foreshadows the distance growing between the couple.

Here we see how Gogol was trying to imagine the timeframe of when his father died and he realizes that while his father was taking his last breaths Gogol was enjoying his time with Maxine. This causes Gogol to feel guilty as he was not there beside his father. Furthermore, Ashoke’s death could also make Gogol feel guilty for making a conscious attempt at distancing himself from his parents and substituting them for the Ratliffs. Additionally, the lines, “thinking of his father living here alone these past months he feels the first threat of tears” once again shows Gogol’s guilt. He is saddened by the fact that his father died all alone while Gogol was blissfully unaware. This thought causes him to almost cry which is significant as throughout this whole incident of facing his father’s death he has not once shed a tear. To link back, these examples show how Ashoke’s death affected Gogol in a way that evokes guilt from him.

We see that he was surprised to hear the news because he had ignored the calls his mother gave and only picked it up when his sister called, “hello, Gerald said, and then to Gogol, it’s your sister this time”. Gogol realises that it would not be the usual call that he would have with his mother but would be something that was serious. From this we can see that he was surprised to hear about his father's death

What I found striking was that he immediately left his new, concocted life with Maxine. The fact was that he had tried so hard to get away from his older life, as “Gogol”, but this was too much to get away from. We can see this when Gerald and Lydia tell him that his mother had called. Gogol “felt a sting of embarrassment”, as he shudders at the thought of a connection with that part of his life. However, once he finds out what has happened, he immediately flies back and reverts back to “Gogol”. In essence, the fact that his event in Gogol’s life triggered him to revert back to his old life, made him and the readers realise that no matter how hard he tried to distance himself from it, he will never truly detach himself from the bonds of family.
