Reflection: Hightower is the reverend who sought to receive any job he could in Jefferson because that was where his grandfather, a Confederate cavalryman, was gunned down. He is seen as an outcast by society and is forced to step down from his post after his scandalous wife dies due to a fall from a tall hotel window in Memphis, where she was said to be staying with another man. Hightower does not come out of his house because he does not like to face the comments of his community. In the beginning of the chapter is he respected by the people, but the community was always curious with regard to his different life aspects, specifically the relationship with his wife. When things started to get more intense with his wife and more scandalous, Hightower began to lose the respect of the community and no one was going to sermons anymore. After the death of his wife he is forced to live in isolation and away from the town, because they no longer viewed him a respectable representation for the town.
