It didn't work out because she was his servant and his family would accept her. He explains to Amir " In the end, the world always wins."(pg.99). Rahim sees Amir's situation with Hassan as the same as his and his girlfriends, they both come from different social classes which puts a staring on the relationship. Rahim thinks Amir is losing Hassan to the world around him. He wants to break it to him , so he doesn't get hurt in the long run.

In the first chapter Amir is in the present, he receives a phone call from Rahim. Rahim reassures Amir "There is a way to be good again"(pg.2). From this dialogue readers can tell Rahim cares about Amir and the develops more as Amir goes back in time to tell the reader about his past. Throughout the story Rahim has been there for Amir when Baba wasn't, he acted as an uncle to Amir. Rahim contacting Amir after all of that time makes sense to the reader now that they know how he cared for Amir and still wants to. Amir is a dynamic character throughout the book and Rahim notices that. When the family is congratulating Amir for winning the kite tournament, "Only Rahim Khan, sitting in the passenger seat next to Baba, was silent."(pg.84). Rahim was silent because he knows Amir only won the tournament for Baba's approval. He didn't want Amir to become someone he's not and lose himself in the end. Rahim has put much effort into making Amir feel comfortable in his own skin.
