An Abolitionist is a person who is against slavery, and they are trying to get rid of slavery. The abolitionist movement was a plan to help slaves escape harsh treatment. Even though slavery was abolished in the 1800's, the North of the U.S still kept slaves for their own use. Some ways people got rid of slavery was by giving speeches, writing books of the evils of slavery, writing in newspapers, and helped slaves escape in Underground Railroads. All of these plans helped slaves escape and decreased slavery.
Some import abolitionist were William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina and Sarah Grimke, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Tubman. William Lloyd Garrison had a big impact on slavery. He was a vocal abolitionist and he published the newspaper, The Liberator. Not only that, but he also formed a group called the American Anti-Slavery Society in the year of 1833. Next, was the Grimke sisters. Angelina and Sarah Grimke were daughters of a slave owner , and they gave lectures to people about how they felt and how they were treated, so that people would understand that slavery was a bad thing. Not only that, but there was Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Frederick Douglass is a well known slave who escaped. He contributed to the abolitionist movement by lecturing people and later became one of the leaders. He even wrote the North Star in 1847 so that people could read it and know what slavery was. Likewise, Sojourner Truth, who was a former slave, gave speeches about the evils of slavery. He was inspired by Frederick Douglass. Lastly, there was Harriet Tubman. This person was a conductor of the Underground Railroad, which was a secret way to help slaves escape. She was an escaped slave herself, and helped more than 300 slaves escape. Overall, the Abolitionist Movement really impacted the U.S. It helped like thousands of slaves escape.

Women's Rights

Women's rights were always taken for granted. Women were not allowed to vote (also called Suffrage), hold office, keep wages to themselves, or own any property for themselves. The Women's Rights Movement changed all of this. They had a lot more freedom than before. Some ways they reformed was by giving speeches, holding conventions, and informing the government. All of these different ways helped contribute to more rights for women.
Some important leader of this movement was Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Both of these women were in charge of the Seneca Falls Convention. The Seneca Falls Convention was a convention where people discussed how women should have more freedoms. After this convention in New York, they proposed the Declaration of Sentiments based of of the Declaration of Independence. Some other important people who helped in this reform movement were some abolitionists like Douglass, Truth, and the Grimke Sisters. Not only that, but two other famous people named Susan B Anthony and Lucy Stone also contributed to this movement. As an impact of this hard work, New York passed laws allowing women to keep their property and wages and other states started to do the same thing as they did. In addition, women were even able to vote in 1920. Overall, all these people really helped to give women more equal rights. Now women can vote, own their own property, keep wages, etc.
