During the Soviet era, a beautiful kind of traditional Kyrgyz music was almost lost to European music styles. The local music was transformed into music supporting Soviet cultural policy, which stated that music and art should be “national in form, socialist in content” (“Tengir-Too”). It wasn’t until 1991, when the Soviet Union officially disbanded, that the traditional folk music of Kyrgyzstan started to reemerge.

Tengir-Too is a musical group that plays traditional Kyrgyz mountain music. The group performs with traditional Kyrgyz instruments as well as common Kyrgyz textures and musical forms. Some of the instruments include Jew harps and Komuz lutes, which closely resemble the sound of a guitar. Nurlanbek Nyshanov, the leader of Tengir-Too, experiments with different genres and different timbres of the traditional Kyrgyz instruments. The sounds of the instruments alone are beautiful, but the passion of the group members and their connection with nature in the mountains give a whole new meaning to the music. Their music may be traditional, but their message will last forever: be one with nature and be one with yourself.
