I strongly believe that this statement is true as a society promoting gender equality means that everyone, regardless of their gender outlook is respected. Within a functioning society, equality in any context is significantly important. This is largely because holding gender equality means equal working opportunities, and salaries, as well as a resultant reduction in social gender stereotypes. These factors all ultimately combine to boost mental health and living factors of those living in the given society.

When gender equality is achieved within a society and is present as the norm, men will have greater choice in their opinions - particularly around careers- and thus will hold less discrimination when undertaking careers that have been stereotypically associated with females. Furthermore, there will be lower pressure to conform to societal stereotypes, particularly around masculinity as well as physical and emotional health. These stereotypes include having to be tough, dominant, or aggressive. Achievement of gender equality will cause breakage of such stereotypes which may also trigger greater mental health awareness practises for men.

What are some benefits for women?

Perhaps the largest or greatest benefit for women from the attainment of gender equality is that violence against women and girls is significantly reduced. This ensures that we have safer and more confident communities as well as the assurance of the basic human right of safety. Gender equality will result in the control of men on women's careers (particularly in current developing countries) being limited, allowing women to achieve their own goals surrounding career or personal decisions. Gender equality is projected to decrease rigid stereotyping, dominant masculinity, and greater economic improvement. The latter is particularly because women would not be forced to complete or follow the decisions made by their male counterparts meaning that they can create their 'own life' and contribute to society in their own manner. Fundamentally, with greater female choice there is a higher number of employees (as women often want to join a workforce), thus allowing for more economically contributing citizens as per basic economic principles of the Supply and Demand of Captial/Consumer Goods.

The primary benefit for the citizens identified as transgender or gender diverse through achieving gender equality is that there is increased acceptance and inclusion of non-binary people. Communities that promote gender equality are more likely to accept and respect individuals of all gender identities, reducing instances of discrimination and social exclusion. There will also be improved mental health for those people as they do not have to be faced with gender-based expectations or socially excluded due to gender preferences. Greater gender equality may also allow for greater healthcare services and access for people as gender-diverse people will feel greater confidence in completing surgeries such as hormone therapy. Finally, there will be enhanced safety and a reduction in violence against LGBTQIA+ people due to the greater levels of community support as a result of gender equality.

Describe 5 actions/strategies that young people can take to close the 'Gender Gap' and work towards gender equality

There are various approaches that young people can take to ensure that the 'Gender Gap' is closed and that ultimately gender equality is achieved.

Educate Themselves and Others

Young people can learn about common gender issues, gender gaps, and challenges to attempt to feel sympathetic and thus develop the necessary emotional outlook to solving issues such as the Gender Gap. Through educating themselves, they should also raise awareness about these issues and teach others so that more people are aware and the gender gap is reduced.

Advocate for Inclusive Policies

Young people should advocate for inclusive policies that promote gender equality, such as anti-discrimination policies, gender-neutral bathrooms, and inclusive student curriculums. This will not only promote better gender equality but it will also promote community involvement for young people as a side benefit.

Challenging Gender Stereotypes and Norms

When encountering stereotypes associated with gender, young people should speak up about the given issues and challenge the norms. This can be completed in a respectful, yet firm manner - in whatever form (online, classroom, or other settings). This will allow for the creation of safe spaces in not only education environments but external locations as well, to make sure that everyone is comfortable in their actions and self (in avoidance of traditional stereotypes).

Promote Equal Representation

Young people should support and promote media that accurately and positively represents people of all genders. This can include books, movies, TV shows, and online content. They should also encourage and support individuals of all genders to take on leadership roles in schools, communities, and organisations, to allow for greater models of diversity and high levels of gender equality.

Support Gender Equality in Sports/Activities

Young people should advocate for the creation of inclusive sports teams and extracurricular activities that welcome participants of all genders. This will ensure that all genders have equal opportunities to participate in and lead various activities, from sports to academic clubs. It is important that everyone has access to health-based physical outlets regardless of gender, thus awareness or advocacy of this will allow for the closure of the gender gap.

How do the dynamics of power play out in this scenario? Who has power and why?

Within the given short film, the dynamics of power play out in the favour of the birthday girl and her cousin's friend named Nick. These dynamics overpower the 'photographer' and the birthday girl's friend (Mel), respectively. The birthday girl is seen to host the party and pressurise the 'photographer' to listen to her and follow her instructions which ultimately crosses legal and ethical barriers. The situation went way too far in that an inappropriate video of a person at a party was released to all friends and party invitees. This highlights the power dynamic in favour of the party host.

The second example of power dynamics is present within Mel and Nick - who was attempting to assert personal masculine dominance over her. This resulted in the power favouring Nick who was shown to be controlling and intimidating. This is inferred through the conversations he undertakes with Mel. This power dynamic made Mel uncomfortable and ultimately led to her downfall.

Power is being abused by Bianca and Nick. This is evident firstly through Bianca's actions of pressuring another individual to take inappropriate photographs. As the authoritative figure in the party, she is powered so that the other guests listen to the instructions she gives. She abuses this power by forcing the ‘photographer’ to provide better images and videos, causing an inappropriate video to be exposed to people, especially considering that the victim did not consent to be filmed in the first place. Bianca also abuses her power on another guest in the form of Mel, by forcing her to 'show some more skin', despite Mel's hesitant nature and unease at this power-based or influential request.

Additionally, Nick abuses his power by being a stereotypically dominant masculine figure, by attempting to flirt with Mel, despite her obvious discomfort.

The power dynamics could be used positively by both Bianca and Nick. Bianca could have refrained from causing change to Mel's appearance and allowed her to wear whatever she was comfortable in. Additionally, Bianca should not have asserted her power over the 'photographer' and become jealous after looking at a previous image. Instead, she should have allowed the party to run smoothly and not cause such damage and embarrassment to other people attending.

Furthermore, Nick should have been more positive and sensitive towards engaging with Mel by allowing her to make decisions for herself and giving her privacy when required.

In a healthy relationship, power is equally balanced between both people, ensuring that both partners hold a say. Partners should respect and value each individual's opinions to understand and discuss each decision. Power-balanced relationships also ensure that each individual understands the other's right to respect and self-satisfying decisions without fear of contradiction or mocking. These relationships hold no power imbalances as they are equally shared between the two partners - whom respect each other's privacy and beliefs.

What do you think the expression ‘trust your gut instinct’ means, and are there any indications of the characters having a gut instinct they didn’t act on? Why might people not act on gut instinct?

I believe that the expression 'trusting your gut instinct' refers to acting on the first feeling that crosses your mind - your primary emotion or thought. This feeling generally occurs when in a fight or flight reaction or response system. Mel is seen to show this 'gut instinct' when Nick advances on her by touching her without consent by grabbing her waist for the photo. Mel's initial instinct was to move away (evident through her disgusted facial expressions), however, she chose not to so that a 'scene' would not be created. Consequentially, Mel did not react to her 'gut feeling' which resulted in her being unable to indicate to Nick that she feels uncomfortable. After this, Nick continues to behave inappropriately and without consent (in a flirtatious manner) making Mel feel uneasy and finally confined in a room - without consent or will - with Nick. It is generally considered that one should act upon their ‘gut instinct’ as that is the first though present. If not acting on gut instinct, it can cause large consequences which one has to weigh up when initially choosing for the cause of action.

I chose this video as it highlights the stereotypes surrounding males having to be masculine, and the common expectations around the way in which males interact with others or complete certain things. These stereotypes are considered highly controlling as they are often capable of restricting men from expressing themselves in their own manner, and instead force them to succumb to societal barriers. These expectations force young men - in particular - to act or behave in ways that they do not intend to act. This forces them to make perhaps inappropriate decisions or unlawful decisions due to expectations of those around them - as seen in the latter aspects of the video.

The issues of having to comply to societal opinions of being masculine and decisive in intimate relationships can be harmful in lots of different manners. Firstly, it can cause severe mental and physical health harm to the male as they would have to engage in activities that they are previously unwilling to participate in. It also results in them not being able to feel secure and safe, as well as feeling constantly stressed. If young males are pressured to act in a certain manner within sexual relationships and not be themselves, it can cause major issues externally as often masculine ways of acting can result in physical or emotional harm to the other partner in the relationship. This creates legal trouble as well.

In solving, these issues it is essential that the individual in the video discusses the stereotypical issues faced by family members or a trusted adult, who can understand the scenario and make the individual feel more confident. Other strategies that the boy could implement include reducing negative thoughts from his mind which may hinder him from being able to communicate the issues with his parents.
