Hybrid learning is something that most teachers had to experience during the height of the pandemic. At some point, you were fully engulfed in teaching students at school and the students who elected to stay home. It was challenging and we had to learn on the spot, but now we are masters at the hybrid model.

COVID is still very much a thing and most students will experience having it at some point during the school year. That goes for teachers too!

Since blended learning give students and teachers the opportunity to do most of their learning and work online, they ideally will not miss any important instruction due to being in quarantine.

Many students, especially for me this year, were pulled out of class for testing positive. With the use of tools such as Google Classrooms students are still able to attend class "in the stream" where they listen and participate as a virtual student. If they are too sick to attend they can work on the materials that are presented in the classwork section and watch any videos or other tools that deliver instruction to them.

Unit and Lesson Goals

The overall goal of the unit is for student to learn how to compare and contrast characters to better understand the story structure and to gain comprehension.
Students during this lesson will learn about characters and the problems/solutions that they face within a story. They will be able to analyze a character based on their actions, words, and thoughts and compare them to another character from the same or a different story. Students will use a Venn Diagram to help them organize their thoughts and information about their characters.

STWBAT compare and contrast two characters finding two similarities and two differences using a Venn Diagram with 90% accuracy.

The unit will begin with reading two texts about culture and identity. One text is Crow Boy and the other is One Green Apple. After reading these texts and determining who the main characters are that will be compared, students will be given a model of how they will compare and contrast. TTW use two characters that students already know and will model how they want the graphic organizer to be filled out.

They will need to find two similarities about the main characters, and two differences. Students will be filling out their Venn diagram on their laptops using a pre-filled Google Slide that they can plug their answers into. The teacher will have access to all groups slide show and can help them make edits and format things if they get funky. (some students like to play with settings!)

Students will be expected to participate fully and give their personal best on their work. Students who are not as confident with their typing skills can work with the teacher or a partner in order to fill out their slide show.
