Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He lived in a log cabin in Kentucky and grew up in poverty. When this multi-talented man moved to Indiana in 1816, his mother died and his father quickly remarried. Abe loved to be educated, but only got about one year of formal schooling. He was an avid reader and in fact, he gained most of his knowledge from borrowing books from other people. This hardworking boy became extremely smart and grew tall and strong. This young man worked several different jobs such as a shopkeeper, surveyor, postmaster, and a soldier. This inspiring future president never gave up when times were difficult.

Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was a history-changing president? During the fifth week of his presidency, Honest Abe had to deal with the Civil War and fight against Confederacy States in an effort to end slavery. This awesome president thought everybody should be treated equally and therefore slavery should be abolished. The Civil War would potentially split the U.S. as the North was against slavery but the South was for slavery. Abe worked extremely hard to quickly manage his troops. Year by year, the war raged on but Lincoln was confident in his choices. The war went on for approximately four years. The Union was eventually successful and a law was passed stating that blacks could no longer be slaves. Now slaves were free and Abraham Lincoln was credited for keeping the Union united.
